After a stellar career with the Bisons hockey program, three-year captain
Jonny Hooker has taken the next step, earning a pro call-up to the American Hockey League. Hooker was originally signed by the ECHL's Tulsa Oilers, and after just three games, the Winnipeg native has risen up the ranks to the team's AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls. The team's next game is Friday on the road against the Texas Stars. San Diego's parent club in the NHL is the Anaheim Ducks.
"Jonny has put in an incredible amount of work into his development. He's earned every opportunity he gets," said Bisons head coach Gordon Burnett.
"We're happy and excited for the opportunity Jonny has in front of him. We know that the person he is and the player he is, he'll take full advantage of it. We wish him good luck in the pursuit of his professional hockey career."
Hooker graduated from the Herd having recorded 84 points in 108 career games. He tallied double-digits in assists and goals every season, with his 14 power play goals last year tying for the single-season school record. His 24 career power play goals rank third all-time in program history. In his senior year, Hooker recorded 21 points, including ten goals, helping the Bisons to a season-total of 27 points and 12 wins, their best result since 2017-18.
Academically, Hooker graduated with a degree from the Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources.Â
