SASKATOON, Sask. — Less than 24 hours after suffering their third loss of the season to the Saskatchewan Huskies, the Manitoba Bisons responded with one of their strongest efforts of the young campaign, earning a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Griffiths Stadium.
The result gave Manitoba its first point of the 2026 Canada West season. The Bisons showed resilience throughout the match, battling back after conceding an early goal against a Saskatchewan side that entered the contest unbeaten.
Despite playing on the road for the second consecutive day, Manitoba came out with purpose. Mia Fonseca and Bianca Cavalcanti each forced saves from Saskatchewan goalkeeper Julie Snider in the opening minutes as the Bisons looked to set the tone early.
The Huskies capitalized on an opportunity in the sixth minute when Cassidy Vieira finished a chance set up by Hazel Turnbull to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Saskatchewan nearly doubled its advantage shortly afterward when Danielle Lehmann struck the crossbar in the 10th minute.
Manitoba continued to push forward and found its breakthrough in the 31st minute. Taylor Sousa delivered the setup and Bianca Cavalcanti finished the play for her first goal of the season, pulling the Bisons level at 1-1. The goal capped a strong first half from Cavalcanti, who recorded four shots and put all four on target.
The teams entered halftime deadlocked despite Saskatchewan holding a slight edge in possession and attacking opportunities.
The Huskies applied heavy pressure throughout the second half, outshooting Manitoba 9-3 after the break and earning five corner kicks. Manitoba's defence stood tall, however, with goalkeeper Kailey Johnston-Krulicki making several key saves to preserve the tie. Johnston-Krulicki finished with five saves on six Saskatchewan shots on goal.
Saskatchewan threatened repeatedly in the closing stages, including back-to-back corner kicks and several late shots in the final minutes, but the Bisons held firm. Manitoba nearly found a late winner of its own when Mackenzie Munro-Flora fired wide in stoppage time.
Cavalcanti led Manitoba offensively with four of the team's seven shots and accounted for the Bisons' lone goal. Fonseca added the other shot on target, while Sousa collected her first assist of the season.
After a difficult start to the year and a setback against the same opponent the day before, the Bisons showed determination and growth by earning a result against one of the conference's early-season leaders. The point marks another step forward for a Manitoba squad continuing to build under first-year interim head coach Fabio Capone.
