River East’s Rebecca Martin was part of the crop who committed to the Bison Women’s Soccer Team in late March 2016. She joins the Bisons from FC Northwest, having played in three successive national tournaments representing Team Manitoba.
Martin also brings leadership qualities to the Bisons, as she served as River East Collegiate captain for two seasons. The Winnipeg native was recruited following successful trails at the summer and May long weekend ID camp.

On the pitch, Martin primarily assumes a role in center midfield. However, versatility in her playing style was developed over the course of her freshman season and by the end of the campaign, she had stints playing as an attacker. She even scored her first Bison’s goal in a dramatic 1-0 win over Calgary in 2016 playoffs.

“We beat Calgary 1-0, which nobody had expected. We moved on to CanWest Select Six which was the first time for Manitoba since Desiree Scott’s season. We were all so amazingly happy and that was the highlight of my season.”
When asked what she brings that is unique to her position, Martin opted to answer with the lighter side of soccer in mind.

“When I run, I run with a smile on my face and it probably will make everyone laugh.” Said Martin.

However, above all else, the now second-year player has a taste of U Sports action and is ready to take her experience to the next level. “Even though everyone sees you as an underdog team, don’t give up because there could be the one play that upsets the number one team and sends the underdog team to the top six.” Said Martin.
