Midfielder Ana-Maria Costa is an example of how high-level skilled players can stay at home and succeed on the pitch. A year prior to kicking off her post-secondary career, Costa wanted to play soccer at the university level while staying at home. All the signs pointed to the Bison’s Women’s soccer team.
“I got in contact with coach Vanessa Martinez-Lagunas and she invited me to watch a practice to see how I liked it,” said Costa. “Later I was invited to a tryout with the full squad at the time.”
Following the tryout, Martinez-Lagunas expressed her interest in signing Costa and within a few weeks, the FC Northwest product committed to the Bisons.
“It was a very exciting and proud moment in life.” Said Costa about her recruitment experience.
Motivation is an important element displayed by Costa both on and off the pitch. It is especially important to her character whenever she is called upon by the team.
“I’m always ready to work hard and play the best I can.” Said Costa. “Whenever and wherever I’m needed, I always play my hardest not only for myself but for my teammates as well.”
Following her first season in the CIS, Costa also recognized the importance of being a student athlete. “In my first year, I not only grew into a better, smarter player but I learned so much from my teammates on how to be a good student – how to balance work, school and soccer all together.” Said Costa.
One of the multilingual players in the Bison’s lineup, Costa can speak, read and write in three different languages, English, Spanish and French.
