Midfielder Breanne Smith called her arrival at the University of Manitoba “a blessing in disguise” after her commitment to an American university fell through.

The native of Winnipeg was able to stay home and link up with the team she played against in the past.

“After playing in a winter camp, I knew that the Bison's soccer team was going to be my home. I played against the Bisons team and have always been impressed with the style of play and players," said Smith.

“From these positive impressions, the Bisons women's soccer team has always been a top choice. “

In 2016-17, Smith captured the MHSAA city championship with St. Mary’s Academy alongside fellow Bison first-year player Emma Romanica. The 2017-18 season helped Smith’s learning curve, especially with the Bisons playing host to the National Championships. 

“My performance really improved by playing with and against high performance players," said Smith. “Hosting the national championships and getting to see the best players in the country was eye-opening and I learned a lot from watching them play.”

With team spirit high to kick off every season, Smith eyes another playoff appearance in 2019 for the Bisons. 

“Our team is diverse, and our players have a great relationship with one another, which will make the Bisons very successful this season. At the end of the game we all make up one team; we win together and lose together.”
