So some, goalkeeping may just be a position on the soccer pitch. For Christine Majury, it’s a way of life. She has maintained a position with the Bison for a substantial part of her life – first as a student-athlete and was an inaugural member of the precursor squad that eventually was granted membership to the CIS. Today, Majury is the women’s soccer goalkeeping coach, extending an association to a Bisons team that has lasted for over 15 years.
“I’m a woman that is passionate about coaching female goalkeepers and I work hard to be a role model that can positively influence their lives,” Said Majury.
A former coach of volleyball, basketball and soccer, Majury has been an educator of sport since her high school days. However, it was evident that goalkeeping had been the position she was destined for, even at an early age.
“Goalkeeping coaching had quickly become by passion,” Said Majury, talking about her high school experiences. “It can be a misunderstood position, and it was significant for me to advocate for the position and educate the importance of the role. It’s critical to break down the position and educate keepers in individual puzzle pieces that make the bigger picture of the position.”
Majury hopes by the time that each of the Bisons goalkeepers concludes their university playing career, they can apply their position to their daily lives.
“The position also applies practically to life. It teaches leadership, patience, communication, evaluation, problem-solving and how to trivial situations.” Said Majury. “It sets up any goalkeeper that have finished the Bison program to succeed in life.”
