Ricardo started playing as a goalkeeper around the age of 5. At age 10, he represented ADQC, a regional Portuguese soccer club. At 13 years old, he was called to the U-14 Lisbon Capital Provincial team. He ended his high-performance career of 18 playing for S.C.E Bombarralense (U-18 Portuguese National league) after being called up for trials at C.F. Os Belenenses, competing in the men’s Portuguese top league (Primeira Liga) at the time.

During his years of playing youth high-performance soccer in a top FIFA-ranked country, Ricardo attended several goalkeeping workshops and summer camps and accumulated thousands of hours in specialized training. After starting his higher education studies and as he progressed in his academic career, he played in provincial competition leagues and coached in Portugal, Canada (Nova Scotia and Manitoba), and Ireland.

Ricardo is currently working towards his National C license from Canada Soccer. His goalkeeping coaching credentials include the Goalkeeping National (D) Licence from the Football Association Ireland (2019) and the Goalkeeping Level 1 Diploma from United Soccer Coaches (2017). Ricardo is an Assistant Professor in Earth Sciences at the University of Manitoba, having previously been at Dalhousie University (Canada), Trinity College Dublin, and the University of Exeter (UK).
