2020-21 Women's Soccer Roster
Biography
Hayley Ward understands the privilege of being given big time minutes as a freshman. The defender played 11 games in 2016-17 as a rookie, and didn't not take any those minutes for granted.
“I had the opportunity to start and play in many of our games during the 2016-17 season, and as a rookie it was really a privilege to see the field at all. I believe I grew a lot as a player and learned a lot about my position and also what it takes to compete at a university level.”
“There is always room to improve and I hope to make an impact on the team this year and continue to grow as a player.”
In just three short years, Ward has accomplished two impressive feats that are not achieved by many players in their time with the Bisons. In 2017, she was named the team’s defensive player of the year. Last season, she was named a co-captain of the Bison women’s soccer team, an honour she will carry again this season. She also displayed her scoring abilities in 2018, scoring her first career goal -- the eventual game-winner -- in the opening game of the year against Regina.
"In my fourth year and second season as captain I’d really love to bring my leadership and communication on the field to the next level," Ward says.
"As well, I would love to get a few more points this year, hopefully at least one goal but mainly assists as my position allows me to create scoring opportunities for my teammates through long balls and crosses into the box and over the other teams defensive line."
With a captaincy position under her belt and proven abilities at the university level, Ward will also look to lead the Bisons into a higher league position in 2019.
"Some of the key lessons I have learned over the years are patience and time management, both on and off the field," she says.
"Being a university athlete time management is something you cannot survive without so is something I’d say every athlete must learn if they want to continue through their five years of eligibility. As for patience, soccer is a long game and you really develop a deeper understanding of the game through the years. Things aren’t always going to go as you want in both games as well as practices, so you must learn to be patient.
