Biography

Kailyn Balfour from Thompson, MB, views the game of soccer from a defensive perspective. She plays as both a defender and in defensive midfield.

I’m able to pick up on the offensive team's cues which allow me to read where the ball is going to or what they are trying to do," said Balfour.

"I can also not only see the game from a player’s point of view but I am able to see it from a coach’s perspective as well.

It’s no wonder that Balfour can be a very analytical player. Her contribution was integral to FC Northwest’s successes in 2012. That season, the club formerly known as Northern Lights clinched a silver medal at the Canadian Club National Championships, their first since 1991.

In 2015, Balfour also earned her Provincial B soccer coaching license in 2015 and is now one of the highest qualified young female coaches in Manitoba. She has also served as head coach of the Garden City Collegiate girls’ soccer high school team.

Having overcome some injuries that occurred as a freshman, Balfour realizes that the Bisons was the right choice after the encouragement she received during that period.

"My teammates really made me feel welcome and supported me through some tough times. It's hard to imagine anyone else being able to do that."

She considers her overcoming of these injuries as one of her greatest achievements as a Bison.

"I want to continue to progress and get better as an individual and as a team," she said.

"We want to get back to the playoffs and work our way back into the national championship tournament.
