2018 Women's Soccer Roster
Biography
Three years ago, BisonĀ goalkeeper Madison Wilford was given the start in a match against the University of Winnipeg. One of the reasons for her optimism was the prospect of facing former teammate and friend Justina Jarmoszko, the then-Wesman goalkeeper. Fast forward three years, and they are now teammates.Ā
āIt's so much fun training with Justina again, she's such a great keeper and person," said Wilford. āShe's so driven, always bringing up the intensity at practice while also supporting the other keepers. She's a really great teammate to have.ā
Wilford rounds out the group of BisonĀ goalkeepers on the squad, with five shot-stoppers vying for one position. The Glenlawn Collegiate graduate sees this number as a challenge, yet also a silver lining for training, camaraderie and support.Ā
āIt can definitely have itās challenges, but it also has its advantages. We're able to run really intense goalkeeper training sessions and help each other get better every practice. We learn from each other and push each other to be the best we can be.ā
Heading into her fourth year of U SPORTS eligibility, Wilford is eyeing to replicate her 2016 form, as she ranked third in the conference for save percentage and second in saves. The opening round of playoffs that season saw the Bisons face the number oneĀ ranked team in the Calgary Dinos.Ā
Wilford repelled all 13 of Calgaryās shot to keep a clean sheet as the Bisons advanced to the next round with a 1-0 win. On one occasion, she was able to take a shot away heading straight for the top corner.
āThere's no greater feeling than making a great save like that in a crucial game,ā said Wilford.
Her distribution of the ball even left her opponent a bit stunned when the Dinos player connected with one of her punts.
āNeedless to say my teammates are still sometimes scared of heading my kicks.ā
