2021 Women's Soccer Roster
Biography
Defender Shaylyn Dyck cemented her position in the women’s soccer team’s backend in the 2016-17 season and was awarded Defender of the Year and Rookie of the Year at the annual awards banquet. The center-back impressed throughout the campaign, starting in every league match of the season as well as two post-season contests.
“At the beginning of the season I was still learning my role on the team and how to play my position the way (coach) Vanessa needed me to,” said Dyck. “By the end of the season I was definitely playing the best I ever have and was very happy with how much I improved throughout the season last year.”
Not only was Dyck able to bring her defensive game to a U SPORTS level, but she was able to lead in her position as well.
“After spending the past year with all the girls, I've made many new friendships and have the confidence to speak up and take charge on and off the field.”
It comes as no surprise that she possesses great leadership qualities, as she captained Lorette Collegiate to the MHSHAA Rural Provincial Championship in 2015-16 and was named tournament MVP.
Now entering her fourth season as a Bison, the defender still looks upon her freshman campaign with great fondness.
“So far, I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment as a Bison so far is having started in every league game since the start of my rookie season,” said Dyck.
“Not many rookies are able to earn their way into the starting lineup at the beginning of their career and I am very proud that Vanessa gave me the chance to prove that I could play at that level right away.”
Last year, Manitoba finished with a goal differential of zero, proving just how strong Dyck and company's defensive core were. Now a critical leader on the squad, she's hoping to continue working on the little things when it comes to her game.
"Some aspects of my game that I would like to improve would be developing my tactical versatility and maintaining my mental strength. I was recently appointed to a co-captain position and with that comes a lot of responsibility. I want to be able to help my teammates on the field as much as I can with direction and good game knowledge.
As far as mental strength, I want to improve my overall confidence. I am slowly working on building my confidence and speaking up for my beliefs. This new role has provided me with an opportunity to improve my mental strength and will help me gain leadership experience for my future career."
