Training Camp Day 1 Report – August 16

Bison Football Breakdown
Training Camp Day 1 – August 16

Star of the Day
On offence, the return of running back Matt Henry highlighted the first day of the 2008 Bison Football Training camp. All eyes were on Henry as he returned after a season-ending injury to his right femur in the Vanier Cup championship game in late November. Henry had a great start to the new season as on his first run, he planted with the right leg, ran hard and accelerated through the hole. The 21 year old was already looking like he did not miss a beat from last season.

Position Battle
On the first day, the quality and depth shone on the receiver position. There were already several standout catches and blocks by returning receivers Simon Blaszczak, Randy Simmons, Mike Mizerski and newcomer Stu Schollaardt, red-shirt Clancy Doiron and Julian Hardy.

Rookie Report
Defensive back and Winnipeg native Pete Adams from Vancouver Island Raiders made a strong impression on the coaches with his confident play and several noticeable knockdowns during 1-on-1 and 'pass skelly' sessions. Receiver Stu Schollaardt from the Edmonton Huskies made numerous catches and also opened eyes with big blocks.

Dobie Says
Bison Football head Coach Brian Dobie enters his 13th season at the helm and made these observations. “I was impressed with the workman like approach on Day 1. You would never know this was a team that won the National Championships as it looked like a squad that wants to move forward and not rest on its laurels. There was no evidence of 'been-there, done-that attitude'.”

Hashmarks
The coaching staff awaits the arrival of newcomer 6'4”, 300lbs. offensive tackle and Brandon native Eric Cliplef on Monday…the two-a-day practices started in 31 C heat and the offensive line were commended in working hard despite the conditions…full pads were used in second session of the day with several 1-1 on sequences with no scrimmage on Saturday.
