Bison Football Breakdown
Training Camp Day 5 – August 20
Star of the Day
Receiver Terry Firr was outstanding on Wednesday. He made several tough catches in traffic and made one amazing circus grab. He snatched the ball from a defensive back as the ball was thrown behind the DB's helmet and hauled it in for a pretty 15 yard completion. He also took off a knee brace and was flying around the field. Firr is catching everything thrown his direction and looks unstoppable as the CIS season approaches.
Position Battle
A big battle is brewing at the punt return position as fifth year Bison Brad Black graduated. The vacant spot is being contested by numerous Bisons, which include RB Duane Allen, REC Terry Firr, REC Julian Hardy, DB Andre Clarke, REC Justin Malec, DB Corey Brown and DB Teague Sherman.
Rookie Report
Offensive tackle Bryce Kristel from the Edmonton Huskies has jumped right into the mix and looks at home with the rest of the O-Line. Defensive tackle Gord Robinson from the Vancouver Island Raiders is a great addition in the rotation on the D-Line.
Dobie Says
Bisons Head Coach
Brian Dobie also works with the special teams group. “I am concerned that nobody has seized the punt return vacancy left by Brad Black. There are numerous amount of players auditioning. We really want to see some separate from the pack but right now, no one has broken free to take the job.”
Hashmarks
The strong winds (30-50 km/h) played havoc with the kicking game. On the positive, the kickers were booming 45+ yard FGs into the wind while the punt returners were having some difficulty with the swirling winds… Receiver Steve Gronick stepped on the field with a Bison jersey for the first time since the Vanier Cup as he finalized a house purchase in Alberta…In the 'skelly' drill in the first practice on Wednesday, the receivers were performing very well with a high completion rate occurring.
