Bison FTB Canada West Football: Saturday, October 17/09 at Manitoba
Final Score: Saskatchewan 31 Manitoba 11
As the Canada West Football season winds to a close, there was an important match-up on Saturday, October 17 at University Stadium (University of Manitoba campus). The No. 7 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies registered a road victory by a 31-11 winning margin over the host Manitoba Bisons in front of 500 fans.
With the victory, the Huskies improved their record to 5-1 in the conference and have clinched a playoff spot while the Bisons fall to 2-4 with their second consecutive loss of the season. Manitoba is still battling for a playoff spot while Saskatchewan has now won three consecutive games.
It is not often in a game decided by a 20 point margin that a turning point occurs only 20 minutes into a football game but this is what happened in the sixth match of the 2009 season for both teams.
After Saskatchewan scored first with two field goals from kicker Grant Shaw (Edmonton, AB, 4th) from 20 and a boomer from 55 yards in the first quarter, the Bisons responded with their lone touchdown drive of the contest. It went six plays for 62 yards and ended when RB James Gerardy (Winnipeg, MB, 4th) scampered into the end zone from ten yards out. As Manitoba seemed to have all the momentum, kick return Jeff Hassler (Okotoks, AB, 1st) found a seem on the ensuing kickoff and bolted for 86 yards and with an unnecessary roughness penalty tacked onto the end of the play, the Huskies were set up on the Bisons' one yard line and punched in the go-ahead touchdown by RB Tyler O'Gorman (Edmonton, AB, 5th) at the 5:50 mark of the second.
Saskatchewan had the lead right back after only a mere 34 seconds and Manitoba could never recover from the rapid touchdown. A close second for a game turning point happened late in the first half as Huskies QB Laurence Nixon (Richmond, BC, 4th) was intercepted by DL Adam Hindley (Thunder Bay, ON, 2nd) on the Huskies 22 yard line. On the next drive, the home side was stopped on 3-and-1 on the Huskies 11 yard line and came away with no points before halftime and the score remained 13-7.
In the second half, Saskatchewan seemed to wear out the Bisons defence as the controlled the ball with the wind in the third quarter. They capitalized with a seven play, 65 yard drive which had Nixon find WR Cory Jones (Edmonton, AB, 5th) on a six yard TD pass after sidestepping pressure from DL Everton Black (Toronto, ON, 3rd). Shaw boomed a spiraling 94 yard punt for a rouge. After three, the Huskies led 24-7.
In the final quarter, the Huskies stymied the Bisons as the looked to get back into the game with the gusty wind but could only muster a field goal and a single off a FG attempt by Scott Dixon (Victoria, BC, 5th). The visitors finished the day with an impressive 11 play drive that used up over five-and-a-half minutes and capped by a one yard TD plunge by O'Gorman for his second TD of the contest.
For the Huskies, Nixon went 20-30 for 209 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs. The game-high rusher was O'Gorman with 68 yards on 15 carries followed by Nixon and Hassler at 23 yards apiece. In receiving, Scott McHenry (Saskatoon, SK, 5th) had four receptions for 62 yards and Rory Kolhert (Regina, SK, 3rd) grabbed four passes for 27 yards. On defence, DB Bryce McCall (Regina, SK, 2nd) led the team with 6.5 tackles along with LB Peter Thiel (Regina, SK, 2nd) with six tackles and one break-up plus DB Harley Irwin (Imperial, SK, 3rd) notched six tackles and one interception. Shaw had a 39.0 punting average on 11 punts and two FGs despite strong wind conditions.
For the Herd, QB Nathan Friesen (Winnipeg, MB) was 15-36 for 176 yards and 1 INT. On the ground, Gerardy led with 55 yards on 11 carries with RB Matt Henry (Mississauga, On, 4th) held to 17 yards on eight rushes. SB Clancy Doiron (Winnipeg, MB, 2nd) had four receptions for 52 yards while WR Jeremy Botelho (Winnipeg, MB, 4th) had three catches for 42 yards and Stu Schollaardt (Grand Prairie, AB, 3rd) with three grabs. On defence, nose tackle Eddie Steele (Winnipeg, MB, 3rd) registered a game-high nine tackles and one forced fumble. LB Thomas Hall (Winnipeg, MB, 2nd) had 7.5 tackles while Hindley had one interception, one sack and five tackles along with Black with one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one break-up with five tackles.
The next Bisons football action is when they travel to play the UBC Thunderbirds (1-5) on Friday, October 23 at 9 p.m. CT held at Thunderbird Stadium. Saskatchewan hosts the Alberta Golden Bears (2-3) on Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m. MT.
