Ashley Voth and Amy Toews named as Bison women's volleyball team co-captains for 2010-11 season

Voth is captain for second consecutive season and Toews selected for first time

The Manitoba Bisons women's volleyball team, pre-season ranked second in the country, is pleased to announce the team co-captains for the 2010-11 season. Right side hitter Ashley Voth and middle player Amy Toews are captains for the Bison women's volleyball team.

Voth is captain for the second consecutive season and Toews (nee Penner) is selected for the first time.

Voth, 22, returns for her fifth and final season with the Herd. She earned her fifth consecutive selection to the Team Canada Senior's Team in 2010. In the 2009-10 season, she was named as CIS First Team All-Canadian and Canada West First Team All-Star.
She was also part of the Bisons team who won a sliver medal at the 2010 CIS National Championship and was fifth in the conference in hitting percentage at .294, ninth in conference kills at 3.03 per game (68 games/206 kills) and ranked ninth in conference points with 3.71 per game. In team stats, Voth led the team with 206 kills, second with 188 digs, tied for second with 57 overall blocks and third with 16 service aces during the 2009-10 conference regular season.

Toews, 22, enters her fifth and final season with the Bisons. She was also part of the Bisons team who won a sliver medal at the 2010 CIS National Championship and was first in the conference in blocks at 1.26 per game (50 games/63 total blocks) in 2009-10 season. In team stats, Toews had 50 kills, good for seventh on the team and added 26 digs and four service aces in 50 games during the 2009-10 conference regular season.

Bison women's volleyball head coach Ken Bentley, in his 25th season, commented, “Ashley and Amy are two remaining players from a great recruiting group from 2006. They have stayed committed to the program and it is a privilege to have them back for their fifth years and lead on and off the court.”

As the 2010-11 Canada West season opens for the Bisons against the Winnipeg Wesmen on October 30 at the Duckworth Centre, the women's volleyball team played in two non-conference tournaments and pre-season matches early this season and has only lost four times in 13 contests.
