Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), in conjunction with Volleyball Canada, announced the student-athletes that will represent Canada in women's volleyball at the 2011 Summer Universiade (the 26th edition of the World University Summer Games) in Shenzhen, China from August 12-23. Manitoba Bisons middle hitter Tricia Mayba and left side hitter Kristi Hunter was selected to the 12 member squad.
Mayba, 23, and Hunter, 22, completed another successful season with the Bisons. Mayba was also selected as 2010-11 Canada West Second Team All-Star.
For Mayba, she earned her first conference all-star recognition after being fourth in Canada West and tenth in CIS in hitting percentage with .292, third in conference (fourth in CIS) in blocks per game at 1.23 and ninth in conference in points per game (3.51). The Winnipeg native started and played in 17 out of 18 conference regular season matches and started all four playoff matches this season. In the 2010-11 season, Hunter, from Roblin, MB native, completed her fourth season with the Bisons and led the team with 173 kills and second on the Bisons with 171 digs.
“This is a great accomplishment for both Tricia and Kristi to represent Team Canada at the 2011 Summer Universiade in China,” said Bison women's volleyball head coach
Ken Bentley. “Both players will gain a wealth of experience playing against some of the best university athletes in the world and then both return for their fifth and final season at Manitoba.”
This will be Mayba's and Hunter's first time in their career to represent Canada at a Summer Universiade. Both players will be entering their fifth season with the Bisons for the 2011-12 season.
