1978 & 80 University of Manitoba Bison Men Volleyball/Team:
The 1978 – 80 era of the University of Manitoba Bisons men's volleyball ball team was within a game of being a three-time CIAU (now CIS) national champion. The team featured plenty of star power and former 1976 Olympians including current Bison men's volleyball head coach Garth Pischke.
RECAP
NATIONAL:
1978 - Marked the beginning of the dynasty that has become the University of Manitoba Men's Volleyball program. The '78 squad posted an incredible 47-2 overall record on their way to the Bisons' first national Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU now known as CIS) title in men's volleyball winning the Tantramar Trophy. Under Head Coach Greg Russell, the Bisons were led by 1976 Olympians Garth Pischke and Tom Graham. Pischke, Graham and national team member Ed Vuckets were named 1st Team CIAU All-Canadians while Dave Loeb and Barry Gros were named as 2nd Team All-Canadians.
1979 - McMaster University in Hamilton, ON hosted the CIAU championships and the Bisons fell short of repeating as national champions in a heart-breaking final. Tied 2-2 in sets and leading by a 14-7 score, the Bisons were unable to put away that final point and lost 16-14 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. (It should be noted that the rally point scoring system would not arrive for several decades so side-outs were common and service was required to score a point). Despite the loss, Barry Gros, Randy Anderson and Graham were all named CIAU All-Canadians.
1980 - A number of veteran players returned with the goal of avenging the 1979 national championship final loss. The CIAU Nationals were held in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan and the Bisons found themselves in the gold medal game against those same Huskies in front of their raucous home crowd. After dropping the first set, the Bisons stormed back to win the next three to claim their second national title in three years. Graham, Bob Glacken and Anderson were named CIAU All-Canadians.
PROVINCIAL:
1978-80 - Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) champions three consecutive years and were undefeated in 1978 conference play prior to going to the CIAU Nationals in Moncton, NB. The 1979 squad posted a 37-7 record in GPAC play. The 1980 team posted a 56-10 record.
