EDMONTON – Third-year netminder Dée-Ana Marion had a 24-save performance to earn a 1-0 shutout for the University of Manitoba Bisons, also taking a weekend series split against the University of Alberta Pandas, Saturday, October 5 night at Clare Drake Arena.

The Winnipeg native doubled her career shutout total with Manitoba while senior forward Brenley Anderson got the game's lone goal.

Sophomore goalie Lindsey Post made 16 saves in the loss for Alberta.

Jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes on Friday night, the Pandas spent the first period of tonight's game engaged in a lengthy defensive battle with the Bisons, both teams only registering six shots and none of the highlight variety.

Early in the second on a Manitoba power-play, Anderson tipped rookie rearguard Caitlin Fyten's point shot to get through Post's five-hole and into the net for the 1-0 lead at the 3:01 mark.

Halfway through the second, as the Bisons continued to apply pressure in the Alberta zone, fourth-year forward Maggie Litchfield-Medd flipped the puck up and over Post across the crease but was unable to find a teammate on the other side of the net before Post cleared the puck to safety.

Heading into the final 20 minutes, Alberta appeared to have a great opportunity to even the game at the 2:18 mark with a full two-man advantage brought on by a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct arguing the initial call against Manitoba.

Yet it was the Bisons with the greatest chance, Brandon, Man. native Amy Lee getting a breakaway that ended with her and her deke effort crashing into Post and dislodging the Alberta net before the puck went over the line.

Killing off the five-on-three, Manitoba had another stellar opportunity as fourth-year forward Meagan Vestby came in on the partial break, cutting into the middle but getting stymied by the brilliant pad save of the Alberta 'keeper.

A late power-play by the Pandas gave them one last chance to push the game to overtime but the Bisons held their ground in front of Marion's less dazzling but effective netminding effort to preserve the win.

Alberta finished the game at 0-5 on the man-advantage while Manitoba went 1-5.

The second weekend of the regular season will feature the Pandas taking on the Mount Royal Cougars in a home-and-home series, playing in Calgary on Friday night before returning to Edmonton for the second game on Saturday. The Bisons will head to Saskatoon for a two-game series against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
