LANGLEY, British Columbia – With goals from Krista Gommeringer, Sarah Hannigan and Alessandra Oliverio, the No. 10 ranked Trinity Western women's soccer team earned its second win in as many nights, knocking off Manitoba 3-0 on Saturday, October 5 at Rogers Field.
Gommeringer tallied her fifth of the season in the 37th minute from the penalty spot to get TWU on the board before Hannigan, scoring her first career goal in the CIS, added an insurance marker in the 68th minute and Oliverio rounded out the scoring in the 90th minute. The win improves the Spartans record to 4-1-3 on the year and also pushes TWU's unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2).
The Spartans have now earned four straight clean sheets and haven't allowed a goal in 390 minutes. Goalie Rachel Bedek (London, Ont.), who earned her fourth win of the year, has been in net for 345 of those minutes, after splitting Friday's contest with Bailey Williams-Kapels (Puyallup, Wash.). The Spartans have gone 225 minutes without giving up a shot on target.
The Bisons (1-5-3) are now winless in four outings as they were shut out on back-to-back nights during their West Coast swing, which included a 2-0 loss Friday against No. 6 UBC.
The Spartans, who had control of the contest largely from start to finish, outshot Manitoba 20-1 while also earning an 8-0 edge in shots on target.
Manitoba goalie Chloe Werle was impressive for the Bisons as she made five saves in the loss.
The Spartans Nikki Wright had a pair of opportunities inside the first six minutes as she challenged Manitoba goalie Werle from 10 yards out and 20 yards out, but on the both occasions the Bisons keeper was in position to stymie Wright's chances.
After numerous scoring opportunities for TWU, the Spartans broke through in the 37th minute when Gommeringer was knocked down in the Bisons box and promptly converted her penalty low to the left corner.
Manitoba's best chance of the first 45 minutes came in the 18th minute when the Bisons Maryn Haswell nearly got to a loose ball inside the TWU box, but was just a step late as it was cleared to safety by the Spartans.
At halftime, the Spartans had an 8-0 edge in total shots and a 3-0 advantage in shots on target.
With TWU continuing to apply pressure in the second half, the Spartans Hannigan doubled her team's lead when she found a loose ball in the box and buried a crack past Werle.
The Spartans kept their tempo down the stretch and in the 90th minute drew a second penalty opportunity. Oliverio stepped up and ripped a no-doubter to the low left corner. It was Oliverio's second goal of the season.
The Spartans return to the pitch Oct. 12-13, when they travel to play Calgary Saturday and Lethbridge Sunday. Both games are at noon local time.
The Bisons are back in B.C. next weekend when they will be in Prince George to play UNBC Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: TWU had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks…Manitoba's Elyce Molyneaux (89th minute) and Daniella Scerbo (90th) were each shown yellow cards.
