Bisons women's hockey finishes first half schedule with a win

Defeat #9 Alberta 2-1 to earn weekend split

Box Score Meagan Vestby's power play goal with 3:05 left in the second period held up as the game winner as the Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team finished off the first half of their Canada West schedule with a 2-1 win over the #9 Alberta Pandas on Saturday, November 30 night at the Wayne Fleming Arena (U of M campus).

Vestby was also named the game's first star. Kyleigh Palmer scored the other goal for the Bisons (9-5-2).

Jayden Skoye had the lone marker for Alberta (9-4-3). Pandas goaltender Lindsay Post seen her shutout streak stop at five games in the loss, a Canada West record.

Manitoba scored the first period's lone goal 6:23 into the frame. Palmer picked up a bouncing puck in the slot and beat Post to give the Bisons an early lead. The goal was the first scored on Post since October 26 at UBC and snapped her Canada West record shutout streak at 351:18.

"We needed to score first tonight," said Bisons head coach Jon Rempel. "To know that we could get one behind her was big for our confidence."

The Pandas would tie it up early in the second period. On their third power play opportunity of the game, Alison Campbell dropped a pass for Skoye who would pot her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Campbell and Jocelyn Zabrick drew the assists on the goal.

Before the horn sounded for the second period, the Bisons would take the lead for good. With Zabrick in the box for boarding, Vestby circled the Pandas net and beat a screened Post with a slap shot from the circles. Manitoba headed to the dressing room after 40 minutes of play up front 2-1.

The Bisons controlled play in the third period and buzzed around the visitors net but were unable to increase their lead. Alberta's comeback efforts were hampered when Kayla Lavallee was sent off for interference with 2:05 left in the game and Manitoba's defence would hold strong. They allowed only four shots in the period, 13 overall, and were a major reason for the Bisons victory.

Dee-Ana Marion made 12 saves to earn the win in the Bisons net. Post made 20 stops for Alberta. The Pandas went 1-for-3 with the power play while Manitoba was 1-for-6.

The Bisons return to action on January 3 when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Wayne Fleming Arena at 7 p.m. CT. The Pandas also start their second half schedule on that day when they begin a home-and-home weekend series with Mount Royal in Edmonton.
