In the fifth set of a men's volleyball game at Investors Group Athletic Centre Manitoba won over the #6 ranked team Saskatchewan (25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 13-25, 15-12) on Saturday, November 9. The final set was heated as both teams were pushing for the win. The cheering crowd went wild when Manitoba started to pull ahead after a 9-9 tie. With a kill from Bisons Devren Dear, Manitoba had the game.
Bisons outside hitter Devren Dear impressed with 16 kills total but the game high went to his teammate Adam DeJonckheere with 17 kills. Saskachewan players Paul Thomson and Bryan Fraser were on top for their team with 14 and 13 kills respectively.
After a close 3-2 loss against the Huskies last night, the Bisons came into the game ready to fight. In the first set the score was tight and tied several times in an almost point for point battle. Manitoba pulled ahead from 20-20 with two service aces in a row from setter
Luke Herr. After a block attack from
Devren Dear and an out-of-bounds attack from the Huskies they took the set.
In the second Manitoba started strong and played hard throughout. The Huskies struggled to return Bison attacks in the middle of the set but picked up their game later on. They couldn't close the gap quick enough and Manitoba won the set with another two service aces in a row from
Luke Herr.
Saskatchewan shone in the third set rallying hard to hit the ball over the net from way out of bounds and throwing down some strong spikes. It was a close finish at 25-23 but the Huskies won with a powerful kill from left side player Jordan Nowakowski.
Manitoba lost their momentum in the fourth making a couple messy mistakes with out of bounds attacks. Saskatchewan led by as many as 12 points throughout and wrapped up with a block attack and a kill from middle blocker Tyler Epp.
Head Coach Cam Johnson says the team's resilience brought them back.
"We're able to rebound and make corrections in areas we've identified as ones we need to get better in," said Johnson.
Manitoba is now 2-4 while Saskatchewan is 1-5.
Manitoba will play again next weekend in a series against the Brandon Bobcats. Games will be at Investors Group Athletic Centre November 15 at 8 p.m. and November 16 at 7 p.m.
