At the 2013 Winter Universiade (World University Games) in Trentino, Italy, Bison women's hockey fifth year defenceman Caitlin MacDonald earned a gold medal as part Team Canada after the squad completed a perfect 7-0 record with a convincing 5-0 final win versus Russia in the gold medal game on Friday, December 20.
MacDonald, 21, added one assist on the game-winning goal and recorded a +3 plus/minus rating in the gold medal game. The Winnipeg native finished with eight points (two goals and six assists) and a +22 rating during the seven overall games played in the Universiade.
Earlier in the tournament, MacDonald, who was also one of the alternate captains for Canada, had a multi-point game with three assists in the 15-0 win over Japan in the semi-final.
"Playing for Team Canada and travelling to Italy for the Universiade Games has been an amazing experience and winning gold is something I will never forget," commented MacDonald after thw victory. "I feel so lucky to have gotten to know and share this experience with this group of people as they have made it such a positive and unforgettable trip."
In women's hockey, Canada went 7-0 and matched their perfect record of 7-0 from the previous two Universiade Games (2011 and 2009). Canada defended the championship won in 2011 when former Bison forward Addie Miles was part of Team Canada gold medal squad that won 4-1 over Finland in Erzurum, Turkey. Plus in the inaugural women's hockey event at the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China, Team Canada beat China 3-1 in the final and former Bison goaltender Stacey Corfield was the starter for the gold medal match.
MacDonald was originally named to the 2011 Winter Universiade Team Canada roster but missed the competition due to an injury.
