On Thursday December 5, Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) announced the team captain and three alternate captains for the Canadian women's hockey team at the 2013 Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy from December 10-21. Manitoba Bisons women's hockey defenceman Caitlin MacDonald was selected as an alternate captain.
MacDonald, 21, is playing her fifth and final season at Manitoba. At the end of the first half of the 2013-14 season, MacDonald is tied for fifth in Canada West defenceman scoring with seven points (four goals and three assists) while playing in all 16 conference regular season games.
In her five year CIS career, she has amassed 55 points (21 goals, 34 assists) in 109 conference regular season games while in the post-season, MacDonald has added six points (1g, 5a) in 11 Canada West playoff games.
The Winnipeg native has earned numerous accolades over the seasons. MacDonald is an alternative captain for a second consecutive season (2012-13 and 2013-14) with the Bisons. She earned her third conference selection (2009-10 and 2012-13 Canada West First Team All-Star; 2010-11 Canada West Second Team All-Star) in four seasons at Manitoba. In 2012-13, she was tied for third among Canada West defenceman and sixth on the Bisons in scoring with 15 points (6g, 9a) while playing in all regular season and playoff games. In the 2009-10, season, MacDonald was also selected as CIS and Canada West Rookie of the Year. Plus, two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian (2011-12, 2012-13).
MacDonald was originally named to the 2011 Winter Universiade Team Canada roster but missed the competition due to an injury.
Canada heads into the tournament as defending two-time champion thanks to a 3-1 gold-medal win over host China in 2009 – when the sport made its Universiade debut – and a 4-1 victory against Finland in the 2011 championship final in Erzurum, Turkey. The roster heading to Italy is comprised of 20 standouts from all four CIS conferences, including seven from the RSEQ, six from OUA, five from Canada West and two from AUS.
