CALGARY – The University of Calgary women's soccer team captured their second win of the season on Saturday, September 14 afternoon when they defeated the Manitoba Bisons 3-1 at McMahon Stadium.
Three different Dinos scored in the win including Tessa Miller with her third of the season, along with second-years Mataya Blakney and Nikki Furukawa.
The game started off sloppy with both teams trying to take possession. In the 12th minute the scoring finally opened with a goal from the visting Bisons. With a ball crossed from the deep corner, defender Courtney Addison was open in front and she beat Calgary goalkeeper Lauren Good to give Manitoba the go ahead goal.
As the half progressed, the Dinos really put on the pressure, keeping possession in Manitoba's end and testing their goalkeeper with a number of chances. The first 45 would end with the Bisons up by one.
In the second, the Dinos evened it up early on as they got an opportunity for a penalty kick. Fifth-year veteran Miller made no mistake as the ball easily got past Manitoba's goalkeeper.
Further into the game, both teams were feeling the pressure needing to score the game winner. It would come from forward Blakney. After a corner, Manitoba would clear the ball, but it would pop out to Miller. The centre midfielder crossed the ball and it would find the head of Blakney who jumped to get it to soar into the net.
To get the security goal, fifth-year forward Lauren Deeks fed a through-ball to midfielder Furukawa and she picked the short side to score her first of the season.
The Bisons will play at the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday, Spetember 15 afternoon game.
