Maggie Litchfield-Medd scored with less than two minutes to play in the third period and Jessica Rosenbaum got the winner in overtime as the University of Manitoba Bisons beat the Regina Cougars 3-2 on Friday night in Canada West women's hockey action.
Alana Serhan had the other marker for Manitoba, while Amanda Schubert stopped 15 shots to pick up the victory in goal. Katelyn Kennedy and Brooklyn Moskowy found the back of the net for the Cougars and Jennifer Schmidt turned aside 39 shots in a losing effort.
With the win the Bisons improve to 14-7-4, while the Cougars see their record drop to 11-10-4.
The first half of the opening period saw plenty of pressure from the Bisons, as the Cougars struggled to break out of their own zone. Just over five minutes in, the Bisons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Serhan picked up a loose puck in the crease and tucked it in past Schmidt. However the Cougars answered back with five minutes remaining in the first. After some nice work by Nicole Mitchell to get the puck into the offensive zone, fifth-year veteran Katelyn Kennedy fired a beauty into the far side of the net just over the blocker of Schubert to tie the game 1-1.
Manitoba got a pair of chances on the power play to start the second. First Triston Riemer and then Tori Head were sent off for boarding and hooking respectively, but the Cougars managed to kill both penalties off. After having some great chances throughout the period, the Cougars finally found the back of the net with less than three minutes to play in the frame. Moskowy walked out from behind the goal line, and after a couple of slick moves fired a backhander past Schubert to give her team the lead.
The Cougars got an early power play to start the third after the Bisons took a penalty for too many men late in the second, but struggled to get anything going. The teams then played back-and-forth for most of the period, but both Schubert and Schmidt stopped everything that came their way. However with 1:15 left on the clock and Schubert pulled for the extra attacker, Litchfield-Medd jammed home a loose puck at the side of the net to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.
The Bisons controlled most of the play early in the extra frame. Just 1:49 into overtime and on a play very similar to the game-tying goal, Rosenbaum poked home a loose puck past a maze of sticks and skates to give the Bisons the 3-2 overtime victory.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon to wrap up the weekend series. Puck drop at The Co-operators Centre is at 3 p.m. CT. All the action will be streamed live at canadawest.tv
