Box Score Lethbridge - Putting a cap on the 2014 Canada West women's soccer season for both teams, the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Manitoba Bisons had to settle for a 1-1 draw on Sunday, October 19.
Bruna Mavignier scored her eighth goal of the season for the Bisons only marker and Kayla Wurzer responded for the Pronghorns, her second of the season.
With the tie, the 'Horns finish the season with a 1-7-3 record, while the Bisons conclude the season with a 4-4-4 record and both teams miss the playoffs.
Coming off a scoreless draw that eliminated the Bisons from post-season contention, Manitoba still wanted to finish the season on a high note and took control of the game early on, pinning the Pronghorns on their own side of the field for long stretches of the opening half.
Amanda Wong and Bruna Mavignier both had chances to open the game's scoring but each of them just could not find the mark.
The 'Horns defensive structure kept the Bisons at bay, but that pressure was finally rewarded in the 33rd minute. Wong blasted a shot off the crossbar from 25 yards out and Mavignier was Johnny on the spot, collecting the rebound and placing a shot into the lower corner as 'Horns keeper Myriah Marino scrambled to get back into position.
The Bisons attempted 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes, finding the net on six occasions and Marino stopped five of the six. The 'Horns only attempted two shots in the half and neither found their mark.
After struggling much of the day offensively, 'Horns striker Megan Welby, while streaking towards the Bison net, was taken down in the box, setting up a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Playing in her final game as a Pronghorn, Kayla Wurzer stepped up and picked the right corner to knot the game up at one.
The goal seemed to inspire the 'Horns and they went seeking for that elusive go ahead goal. Welby had a great look from just outside the box but her shot went wide left.
Off a 'Horns corner kick with five minutes to play, Kim Shellenberg raced into the box and got her head on the ball but it sailed over the crossbar.
Neither team could find the difference maker in the second half and would have to settle for their second consecutive tie.
Shot attempts in the second half were far closer than the opening 45 minutes but the Bisons still held the advantage 6-5.
Marino finished the game with seven saves, while her counterpart Martie Arran made two saves.
