Edmonton- It only took three minutes for the MacEwan University Griffins women's soccer team to establish the only lead they would not relinquinsh in a 3-0 victory over the University of Manitoba Bisons at home on Sunday, September 21.

With summer returning to Edmonton, the weather was not the only thing heating up. Griffins' midfielder Jenny Lam capitalized on the first free kick opportunity of the game after teammate Kassandra Jajczay was taken down just outside the 18-yard box. The goal, placed in the top left corner, marks the second tally for Lam with both coming from free kick chances.

Although the remainder of the first half was evenly played, the Bisons did have a solid chance to even the score. Selina Speranze beat the keeper in the 31st minute, but the Griffins player of the game Kayla Evans was quick to clear the ball from the goal line.

The period ended with the Bisons out chancing the Griffins 6-3.

When teams returned in the second half, both teams inserted a pair of players, but it was the Griffins substitute who would who would find their way onto the scoreboard.

The Griffins controlled much of the play in the early portion of the up-tempo second half. After two dangerous Griffins chances, veteran Shaelan Donovan would make no mistake in scoring the second goal. Substitute Kassandra Jajczay, fed Donovan the ball through the middle while evading the defenders, before Donovan beat Bison keeper Martina Arran with a sliding finish, keeping the ball on the ground.

Kaily Mohn would add an insurance goal for the maroon and white, completing an athletic sideline run from the left wing tucking the ball into the back post. Donovan would be credited with the assist giving her two points in the game.

Robyn Kastner was named the Bison's player of the game. The 5'1" midfielder was a constant presence on the ball and was credited with two of the Bison's 12 shots in the game.

Rebecca Reif was credited with her second clean sheet after making five saves, while Arran moved to 2-2-0 for the Bisons and was credited with turning away nine shots on net.

The Bisons (2-2-0) continue their play next weekend when they travel to take on the Mount Royal Cougars (1-4-1) in a two game series at Mount Royal Fields in Calgary. The Griffins remain at home to take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (3-1-2) in a two game series with kick off scheduled for 12 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at JP Bowl.
