In Women's Hockey, Cougars Outlast Bisons in Goaltenders Duel

Carley Bertram scores game winner, Amanda Schubert and Emma Pincott trade big saves at each end

Box Score The Manitoba Bisons and Mount Royal Cougars again went down to the wire in women's hockey on Saturday, October 17 at Wayne Fleming Arena in a tight matinee match. The Cougars ultimately prevailed by a 2-1 score in what was a goaltenders duel.

Both Amanda Schubert for Manitoba and Emma Pincott for Mount Royal were stellar in their respective goals, as neither was beaten by a clean shot all game long. Only deflections found their way to the back of the net, with Mount Royal ultimately getting one more favourable bounce than Manitoba.

Carley Bertram scored the game-winning goal on a five-on-three power play, and Rachel Piitz also tallied a goal on the man advantage, spoiling what was otherwise an excellent outing for Bisons third year goaltender Schubert.

"She gave our team a chance to win, and that's all you can ask of your goaltender," said Bisons head coach Jon Rempel, referring to Schubert. "She battled hard, but for the second night in a row we didn't bail our goalie out."

Despite his team finding the twine only once through two games against Mount Royal, Rempel was pleased by the chances his forwards were creating. "We had, what, five breakaways today if I'm not mistaken?"

He then added that, when they skate the way they're capable of skating, the Bisons are capable of creating chances like that.

On every one of those breakaways, however, the Cougars were bailed out by their goaltender, Pincott. "She was clearly the difference," Rempel said.

Three of those breakaways belonged to Alanna Sharman, the Bisons leading scorer and their most dangerous offensive threat on this night. Despite trying three different moves, she was stoned by Pincott every time.

Sharman did find the score sheet in the second period, when Alana Serhan took her pass on the power play and banked it off a skate past Pincott. It was the only puck to elude the Cougars goalie all night.

All three goals, including Bertram's game winner, were power play markers, in what was a penalty filled game. "Second game, quick turnaround, often there will be penalties," Rempel acknowledged. "The legs get tired and maybe the brains don't work the way they're supposed to."

Neither team's power play had been clicking of late, with the two teams combining for just a single power play goal headed into Saturday afternoon, but this afternoon the dam burst for both squads.

The Bisons will be back in action next weekend in British Columbia, as they take on the UBC Thunderbirds, while Mount Royal, after sweeping the road trip against Manitoba, returns home to face Alberta.
