Box Score

Edmonton, AB…..The number three Canada West Prairie Division-ranked MacEwan University Griffins women's soccer team are now 1-0 in the 2015 post-season after shutting out the fourth ranked University of Manitoba Bisons (0-1), by a 2-0 score on Friday, October 30 afternoon.  History was made at Jasper Place Bowl as MacEwan not only hosted their first-ever Canada West playoff game, but earned their first quarterfinal win in the program's two-year history in Canada West. In 2014-15 season, the Griffins fell in the quarterfinals to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

A competitive first half saw MacEwan University's offense put pressure on Manitoba from the opening whistle. Quick reactions by the Bisons defense and first-year keeper Madison Wilford kept the score nil-nil as the Griffins out-shot the Bisons 19-6.

In the 43rd minute a MacEwan University throw-in at the 25-yard line by second-year forward Meagan Lemoine found its way to fifth-year midfielder Erika Vecchio. Vecchio's header went mid-left, out of Wilford's reach to put the Griffins up 1-0 going into the half.

Second half action saw the Griffins double up the score in the 50' as fifth-year forward Sheena Tracey beat Wilford top-right off a cross from first-year defender Izabella Ponciano, Edmonton, AB.

Rookie MacEwan University keeper Emily Burns earned her first shut-out in her first Canada West playoff start.

The remaining Canada West Prairie and Pacific Division quarterfinals will be played Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31.  MacEwan University will advance to the Canada West Select Six, hosted by the highest remaining Prairie Division seed from November 5-8, 2015. The Select Six host will be announced after the final Saturday matches.

Bison Notes: Bisons season ends for 2015 and team made post-season for first time since 2012 season. Manitoba went 7-5-2 in 2015 conference regular season and finished fourth in the division.
