Bison women's soccer blog - #3 edition for 2016
Week 5 of regular season games came quickly for the Bison women's soccer team, but we were ready to focus on two very important games against our hometown rivals – the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.

Not only was it a big set of games in terms of points in the standings, but especially the first game of the two-game series, as it was our one and only game of the season in Investors Group Field. This was a very special game for us as it gave us the opportunity, for the second year in a row, to play in a venue that had hosted the Women's World Cup back in 2015.

But this game also served its importance as being the opening match of the 26th annual Duckworth Challenge – a competition between the two universities in the sports of soccer, volleyball, and basketball. We came out to the game hungry for a win and to be able to put our university ahead in the Duckworth Challenge.

After the first half we found ourselves tied against the Wesmen at a score of 1-1. We knew we had to come out strong in the second half to try and gain the lead. Despite dominating the play and numerous goal-scoring chances, we were not able to put the ball into the back of the net. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, but we were very happy with the way we played in the second half and the possession we were able to keep – we just needed to be more lethal in front of the net.

The second game of the series came two days later, and we were ready for a re-match.

We had found ourselves down 2-0 to the Wesmen early in the second half, but kept fighting until the end to a final score of 2-1 for Winnipeg. Although the game did not end as we had hoped, we left the game having learned a big lesson – how to deal with adversity.

We experienced several things that didn't go in our favour, such as scoring a potentially game changing goal that was disallowed due to goalie interference. However, we kept our heads held high at the end of the match, knowing that this loss would only push us to train and play harder for the last few weeks of season.

The Herd will travel out to Saskatchewan this weekend to play the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan, looking for revenge for the tie and loss against the respective teams from our home-opener weekend. GO BISONS!
