Box Score

WINNIPEG, MB - It was never a dull moment at the Wayne Fleming Arena on Thursday, October 20, 2016. The #9 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons captured a 5-1 win as they hosted the Regina Cougars in their first conference women's hockey home game of the season.

The Bisons came into the contest with a perfect four game conference win streak in the Canada West while the Cougars were 2-1-1-0 before the Thursday result. Now, Manitoba stays clean with a 5-0-0-0 mark while Regina drops to 2-2-1-0.

"[I had a] good feeling today with the way we played, haven't played on home ice in awhile. You could tell on their faces," said Jon Rempel, the head coach of the Bison women's hockey team. "I expect a lot more tomorrow."

The first period saw both the Bisons and Cougars battle hard with many opportunities from both sides. At 13:09 in the first saw the game's first penalty kill with an interference call to the Bisons. Almost a minute into the penalty kill, a slashing penalty from the Cougars produced the first 4-on-4 hockey.

After both teams killed off their penalties, the home side got on the board with a goal from forward Jordyn Zacharias with 8:58 left in the first. She was assisted by Venla Hovi and Alexandra Anderson. Then less than a minute later, the visitors responded and got on the board as forward Lilla Carpenter-Boesch notched a goal and assisted by forward Kylee Kupper. This was the first goal Bisons' goalie Rachel Dyck has let in this season.

Manitoba came storming back, and with 2:11 left in the first, Charity Price notched the eventual game-winner with assists to Lauryn Keen and Alana Serhan.

In the second, both sides had opportunities which included several athletic saves by Dyck. The Bisons took advantage of a power play opportunity at the 8:48 mark with a goal by Bison rookie Sheridan Oswald, assisted by Hovi. The visitors tried to mount a comeback but was stymied when with 3:42 left in the period, Serhan made it 4-1 for the Bisons, with assists from Jayden Skoleski and team captain Caitlin Fyten.

As the third period started, 19 seconds into it, Keen scored with a third assist from Hovi. Throughout the third period, both teams fought hard and had a couple good scoring chances but the scoring ended and the final score was 5-1 for the hosts.

Dyck saved 16 shots for the win while Cougars goalie Jane Kish saved 25 and Morgan Baker replaced her in the third and added four saves.

Hovi was first star with Serhan named second star and Keen finished off the Bison sweep as a third star.

Manitoba plays again tomorrow night (Fri., Oct. 21) when they face Regina at the Wayne Fleming Arena at 7 p.m. CT.
