Game Day Football Notes: University of Manitoba Bisons (2-4) vs. University of Alberta Golden Bears (1-5)

The Manitoba Bisons look for their third football win of the 2016 campaign when they travel to play the Alberta Golden Bears at Foote Field. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, October 22. The game is available to watch on live webcast (canadawest.org – fee required).

Bisons game result recap: To start the 2016 season, the Bisons were ranked fifth in the first CIS poll and hosted then #7 Calgary in week one and lost 23-14 on Thurs., Sept. 1. Then, Manitoba, ranked eighth at the time, went on the road for the first time this season and lost a heartbreaking 41-38 road loss to the Regina Rams on Thurs., Sept. 8. In week three, the Herd returned home and won 42-12 over Alberta on Fri., Sept. 16. In week four, Manitoba defeated then #8 Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 38-17 at home during their annual Homecoming Game on Sat., Sept. 24. Then in week five, the Bisons lost a heartbreaker as they went on the road and lost 53-50 in 4 OT sessions on Fri., Sept. 30 prior to the conference bye. In week six, the Bisons went back on the road and lost to then #5 Calgary Dinos by a 63-6 result on Oct. 14 – the third worst margin of defeat in program's history.

Manitoba will now play their third consecutive game on the road and fourth overall away in the seventh week of conference play. The Herd will not play at home from September 25 until October 29 – 35 days.

In the conference standings with two games left for the Herd, Manitoba is in fifth spot with four teams making the playoffs and this game is crucial to make a push for the post-season. Calgary has clinched a playoff berth with a 5-1 record while Regina in second and also clinched a playoff spot with a 5-2. Saskatchewan is in third with 3-3 record while UBC sitting in fourth with a 3-4 record. Alberta is in sixth place with a 1-5 mark.

This is the second meeting between the two teams in the conference regular season in 2016. Manitoba won 42-12 in week three on Sept. 16 at home.

Over Brian Dobie's tenure with Manitoba (21 years), the Bisons have a 15-13-1 overall record against the Bears and 6-7-1 on the road during the conference regular season. Last season, Manitoba played the Bears twice and defeated them both times as Manitoba won 29-7 over Alberta at home (Oct. 23/15) and Bisons won 42-32 on the road (Sept. 25/15).

Alberta won their first game this 2016 season when they won 19-18 over Regina on Oct. 15 in week 5 after starting with five consecutive losses.

Last season, Manitoba was successful on the road as the Herd went 3-1 away from Winnipeg while going 2-2 at home.

In 2016 conference regular season team stats after week six, Manitoba is second in offence with 31.3 points average per game while Alberta is sixth at 14.5 points per game. In offence yards per game, the Bisons are third with 478.8 while the Bears are sixth at 378.7. On defence, Manitoba is fifth with 34.8 points allowed per game while Alberta is sixth at 40.0 pts./game. In yards allowed, Manitoba is fifth (505.3) and the Bears are last in sixth (513.2).

Individually for the Bisons in conference stats, third year QB Theo Deezar is third in passing yards (2,035); tied for third in percentage (63.2%), third in TD passes (15) and third in completions (148). Fourth year Alex Christie is eighth in rushing yards with 301 on 55 carries. First year Bison (third year eligibility) Shai Ross is sixth with 439 receiving yards while rookie Riley Harrison is eighth with 423 receiving yards and second year Jesse Walker is ninth with 398 receiving yards.

In all-purpose yards, Ross is fifth in Canada West with 793 while Christie is 11th with 545 overall yards and Walker in 14th spot with 515. Harrison is 19th with 427.

In addition, Ross is second in kickoff return yards with 304 and Christie in seventh with 170. Third year Jayden McKoy is third in conference punt return yards with 169.

On special teams, second year Matt Riley is third in punting average at 38.4 and first with 14 kicks inside 20 yard line. First year Bison (third year eligibility) Brad Mikoluff is 9/11 in FGs (third in conference at 82%) and 7/7 on extra points after his first start against Sask.
Third year placekicker Ryan Jones is tied for fourth in FGs made with five, tied for seventh in field goal percentage at 50% (5/10) plus 8/8 on extra points.

Mikoluff is eighth in Canada West scoring with 34 points while Jones is tied for 11th in Canada West scoring with 26 points. Ross is also tied for 11th with 26 points while Harrison is T-16th overall with 18 points each.

On defence in conference stats, fourth year linebacker DJ Lalama is first with 56.5 total tackles while fifth year linebacker Bami Adewale is ninth with 35 total tackles. Third year Bison (fifth year eligibility) Evan Foster is T-16th with 27 total tackles while second year defensive back Tristen O'Meara is T-19th with 26 total tackles.

Third year Bison (fifth year eligibility) Evan Foster is tied for first in sacks with four and second in Canada West with seven tackles for losses. First year Bison (second year eligibility) Quinton Bowles is tied for fifth with two sacks. Second year linebacker Houston Rennie is eighth with 4 TFL and Bowles is tied for 13th with three TFL. O'Meara leads in the conference with seven break-ups while Lalama is tied for second with five break-ups plus McKoy is tied for fifth spot with four break-ups. Second year defensive lineman Sonu Kainth is tied for 11th with three break-ups

Lalama is first in Canada West with three forced fumbles while rookie linebacker Caleb Abraham, McKoy and third year linebacker Donovan Gregoire are tied for sixth with one forced fumble. Adewale is tied for first with two fumble recoveries while O'Meara, Rennie, Gregoire have one FR.
 
In the 2015 season, Manitoba went 5-3 in the regular season (third in Canada West) and lost on the road in the conference semi-final to eventual CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds while Alberta went 2-6 and finished fifth and out of the playoffs.

In six games so far this 2016 season, Manitoba best quarter for scoring is the fourth with 59 points. Next are the second quarter (57), third quarter (34) and then first quarter (18). In addition, Manitoba scored 20 points in overtime plus has been shutout twice in the first quarter.

Manitoba has been behind in four of the six regular season games at halftime (only two games: leading vs. Alberta on Sept. 16; leading over UBC on Sept. 30).

The Bisons lost five starters from game one as first year defensive back Marcel Arruda-Welch, fourth year offensive lineman Tom Clarkson, fourth year center Jordan Medal, third year wide receiver Stephen Ugbah and fourth year slotback Derek Yachison along with back-up fourth year receiver Kyle Patchell.

New starters for game two were: fourth year defensive back Akeeno Williams, fourth year center Anthony Daley, second year offensive lineman Reid McMorris, third year eligibility (first year Bison) Shai Ross and rookie Riley Harrison.

In game three, the only change at starters was fourth year Tanner Hamade at one of the two cornerback positions.

In game four, Patchell returns and replaces an injured Anthony Dyck at one of the wide receive positions. Medal returns to his starting center position while first year Bison (four year eligibility) Anthony Daley shifts to the left guard position. In addition, Bison rookie (third year eligibility) Brad Mikuloff will be the new place kicker. At free safety, third year Jayden McKoy moves from halfback to free safety to replace injured Tyler Fong and third year Eric Plett makes his first start of the 2016 season at the halfback position.

In game five, second year slotback Jesse Walker is not available and the receiving positions now have Bison rookie Marquise Thompson makes his first CIS start at one of the wide receiving positions. In addition, rookie Caleb Abraham will be the long snapper in replace of Zach Esau. Plus, center Jordan Medal is out and Anthony Daley shifts from starting left guard to center while second year Reid McMorris starts at left guard position.

Heading into game six, Jesse Walker returns to his starting position as does long snapper Zach Esau and center Jordan Medal. Bison rookie Evinn Lyons-Keely makes his first CIS start at one of the two halfback positions. Third year Eric Plett moves from halfback to cornerback position to start. Third year wideout Stephen Ugbah is back as starter at one of the wide receiver positions. Second year Bison (fifth year eligibility) Cam Fox makes his first start of 2016 at the running back position. At the offensive line positions, second year Zack Williams moves from right to left tackle. First year Bison (fourth year eligibility) Anthony Daley moves from center to right guard start while fourth year Geoff Gray shifts from right guard to right tackle. Second year Reid McMorris is the lone OL to stay in the same position from game five at left guard.

Heading into game seven there are several changes with starters. Fourth year running back Alex Christie returns as starter, first year Bison (third year eligibility) Shai Ross returns as starter at wide receiver position and second year offensive lineman Myles Rose-Standish is back as a starter at left tackle. Second year defensive lineman Sonu Kainth will make first start this season at defensive tackle. Fourth defensive back Akeeno Williams is a starter now at one of the two cornerback positions while second year DB Tristen O'Meara is starting at one of the halfback positions. First year linebacker Caleb Abraham will be the long snapper.


Into week seven, there are nine starters (two on offence; six on defence; one on special teams) scheduled to play the seventh week at the same position throughout the 2016 campaign so far. On offence: QB Theo Deezar, SB Trysten Dyce. On defence: HB Cam Teschuk, WILL LB DJ Lalama, MLB Bami Adewale, DE Evan Foster, NT Braiden Watson and DE Derek Dufault plus punter Matt Riley.

In addition, Jayden McKoy started at halfback for first three games and at safety position for the last four games. On offensive line, Geoff Gray played six games at right guard and game six was at right tackle while Zack Williams played six games at right tackle and game six was at left tackle,

The lone rookie starter in game one was cornerback Marcel Arruda-Welch. Rookie wide receiver Riley Harrison saw his first CIS start in week two and has started the rest of the weeks so far. New Bison rookies starters in week five were receiver Marquise Thompson and long snapper Caleb Abraham. In week six, Bison rookie Evinn Lyons-Keely made his CIS debut as a starter at the halfback position.

First year defensive back Jonathan Bennett makes his first appearance on the Bison lineup at the halfback position.

BISON FOOTBALL NEWS
The Canadian Football League Scouting Bureau on Thurs., Sept. 16, 2016) published its first edition of the Top 20 ranked prospects eligible for the 2017 CFL Draft. On the list, University of Manitoba's Geoff Gray is ranked number 11 (seventh ranked CIS football player and third offensive lineman).

In the first week of the 2016 Canada West football regular season, Manitoba Bisons fourth year linebacker DJ Lalama was selected Canada West Defence Football Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 4/16.
Lalama set a new Bison record for most tackles in a single Canada West conference regular season game despite the #5 Manitoba Bisons losing 23-14 to #7 Calgary in Winnipeg on Thursday, September 1. Lalama, 23, registered a whopping 14 total tackles (11 solo) with 1.5 tackles for five yard losses and added one forced fumble and one break-up in the conference season opener game. Lalama broke the Bison single game record for most tackles in a game with 14 total (Teague Sherman; Oct. 20, '12 vs. UBC with 13.0).

Bison third year quarterback Theo Deezar was selected as CIS and Canada West Offence Football Athlete of the Week for the period ending on September 18, 2016. This is the first time a Manitoba Bisons football player has earned CIS player of the week honours in 2016. He was also named conference player of the week. Deezar went a sparkling 21-27 (78%) for 345 passing yards and four passing TDs – tied for fifth most in Bison history in a single game – in just over three quarters of play during the 42-12 home win over Alberta on Fri., Sept. 16. In addition, Deezar added 21 rushing yards on three carries and scoring one rush touchdown.

Bison first year kick returner/receiver Shai Ross was named Canada West Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 18/16. Ross was instrumental in setting up the home side with good field position as he had three kickoff returns for 94 yards (for a 31.3 yards average) and the longest was 45.

In the fourth week of the 2016 Canada West football regular season, Manitoba Bisons first year place kicker (third year eligibility) Brad Mikoluff was selected CIS and Canada West Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 25/16. Mikoluff made his CIS starting debut and was perfect on field goals and extra points. He went 3/3 on field goals and hit a 36, 30 and 12 yarder while also 3/3 on extra points. He accounted for 12 total points in the impressive 38-17 home win over #8 Saskatchewan on Saturday, September 24..

In the eighth CIS Top 10 football poll of 2016, Vanier Cup finalist Montreal is now at number two as Laval jumps to number one for the first time in 2016. Canada West teams occupy two spots as Calgary is at number four and Regina is eighth. Manitoba started the season in fifth spot in week one and dropped to number eight in week two before falling out of the Top 10 in week three and four and then back in Top Ten in week five and number nine before falling out the last three weeks.

Manitoba has allowed five sacks so far during six games in 2016 conference regular season play and only gave up the first one in week five at UBC in overtime and then four more at Calgary in week six.

Manitoba has only allowed seven offensive TDs in the first half so far this season.

The Bisons seek to make the post-season for five consecutive seasons, they have never accomplished that feat since records kept in 1968, the longest post-season stretch for Manitoba was four years (1999-2002).

In the red zone stats in 2016, Manitoba (22-25) is fourth at 88% with 11 touchdowns while Alberta is fifth at 83% (10-12) and five touchdowns.
In Canada West penalties, Manitoba is fifth with 706 yards on 80 flags while the Bears are fourth with 689 yards on 76. In time of possession, the Herd is fourth at 29:06 while Alberta is fifth at 29:04.

On defence in Canada West stats, Manitoba is third in passing yards allowed per game at 314.2 while Alberta is fourth at 326.3 while in rushing yards allowed per game, the Herd is sixth at 191.2 and the Bears are fifth at 189.2. In defensive interceptions, the Bisons are tied for fourth with seven while Alberta is sixth at two. In defensive TDs, Manitoba and Alberta are tied for third with one.

In turnovers, Manitoba defence has five fumble losses, seven interceptions and six fumble recoveries while Alberta have three fumble loss, two INTs, five fumble recoveries.

In conference sacks, Manitoba is first with ten while Alberta is sixth with four. In sacks allowed, the Bears have allowed eight while Manitoba with five.

The Bisons had 2,286 fans at Investors Group Field for game one in 2016, 1,438 fans at home in game three and 1,846 in week four.

Since 1968 season, the Bisons have officially played 385 Canada West regular season football games and recorded 174 wins, 207 losses, three ties and one overtime loss.

Bison football head coach Brian Dobie is coaching in his 166th CIS game in his 21st season at the helm of Manitoba. His regular season record so far is 86-77-1-1 (52.4% winning percentage) and post-season record is 12-10.

After week six, Deezar has started in 12 of the last 14 conference regular season (plus started one playoff match) games over the last two seasons and holds a 7-7 overall record as starter in three seasons. Deezar has been under center for six consecutive games in 2016.

Deezar also set a new Bison record for most completions in a single game with 30 (old record was set by Deezar in Oct. 17/15 at Regina with 29) plus had the second most attempts in a game with 49 and second most passing yards in Bison history with 457 passing yards in the road 41-38 loss at Regina on Thurs., Sept. 8. In addition, he threw for fourth most passing yards as a Bison in a single game with 447 yards on Sat., Sept. 24 vs. Sask.

In 14 Bison starts, Deezar has thrown for 400+ yards in five different games.

Bison alum David Onyemata made the NFL's New Orleans Saints 53 person roster and played in his first-ever NFL game on Sunday, September 11 against Oakland at home. He wore number 93 after wearing number 97 with Manitoba. In his first NFL game of his career, Onyemata registered one tackle. In game two vs. NY Giants on the road, Onyemata made two tackles. In game three, Onyemata did not register a tackle in the Monday Night Football loss at home to Atlanta. In game four in the first win of season for the Saints, Onyemata registered an assisted tackle. On Sun., Oct. 16, Onyemata had has best statistical NFL game so far as he registered three tackles in a Saints 41-38 victory over the NFL champion Carolina Panthers.

Onyemata made history as the first Manitoba Bisons football player selected in the NFL (National Football League) Draft as he was drafted by New Orleans Saints in the 4th round (120th overall pick) in the 2016 NFL Draft on Saturday, April, 30. Onyemata, 23, is now only the 12th overall CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) football player drafted into the NFL – third overall from Canada West conference.
