The Bison women's hockey team is pleased to announce the team captains for the 2016-17 season. Defencemen Caitlin Fyten will be the team captain while defenceman Erica Rieder is an alternate captain for the season plus forwards Alana Serhan and Alanna Sharman will rotate as alternate captains during home and road games for the upcoming season.
"Caitlin is a strong leader and well respected with a strong voice in the dressing room," stated Bison women's hockey head coach
Jon Rempel, in his 13th season at the helm. "Erica leads by example is a hard worker throughout her Bison. Alana is very local and does a lot for the team while Alanna is always positive plus brings a positive and energetic vibe into the room as a veteran."
Fyten, 21, is a first time team captain after being an alternate captain in 2015-16 as she heads into her fourth year at Manitoba. The 5'7" defenceman accumulated four points (two goals, two assists) while sixth on the team with 46 shots in all 28 conference regular season games in 2015-16. In three seasons at Manitoba, the Cremora, AB native has scored 21 points (6g, 15a) in 84 conference regular season games (has not missed a Canada West game).
Rieder, 19, dons the 'A' for the second time with the Bisons in her third year. The 5'9" defenceman had a strong sophomore season with 11 points (5g, 6a), good for sixth in conference defenceman scoring while playing in all 28 conference regular season games in 2015-16. The Regina native was named on the 2014-15 Canada West All-Rookie Team after being eighth in conference rookie scoring with 11 points (4g, 7a). In two seasons at Manitoba, Rieder has notched 22 points (9g, 13a) in 55 conference regular season games.
Serhan, 21, wears the 'A' for the first time with the Bisons in her fourth year. The 5'11" forward registered 14 points (3g, 11a), tied for 19th in conference scoring while playing in all 28 conference regular season games in 2015-16. In three seasons at Manitoba, the Porcupine Plain, SK native has scored 51 points (24g, 27a) while not missing a conference regular season game (84).
Sharman, 20, is a first time captain in her third year at Manitoba. The 5'8" forward finished seventh in Canada West scoring with 22 points (10g, 12a) while playing in all 28 conference regular season games in 2015-16. The Winnipeg native was 2014-15 CIS and Canada West Women's Hockey Rookie of the Year. She averaged over a point a game in her two year CIS career with 59 points (27g, 35a) in 56 conference regular season games.
