The Bison women's soccer team (3-4-1 record), in partnership with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, will play the second ever CIS game at a World Cup venue, Investors Group Field, on Thursday, October 6 at 6 p.m. CT versus the Winnipeg Wesmen (1-5-2).
Tickets for this special event will be available on Ticketmaster.ca for $10 plus fees (children 12 and under are free if they are accompanied by at least one paying adult). University of Manitoba students are free with more information in the Tickets section of gobisons.ca website.
The match will also be part of the 26th annual Duckworth Challenge event (a friendly competition that pits the University of Manitoba versus the University of Winnipeg in women's soccer, basketball and volleyball – both teams).
Bison women's soccer head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas, in her fourth season at the helm, talked about the chance to play at an international venue. "We are very excited to have the opportunity to play once more at the world-class Investors Group Field stadium, where several matches of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup took place last summer. It is also extra special that this match is part of the Duckworth Challenge between our two local universities, the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg. We know of the importance of this local derby and we are really looking forward to it. We invite the whole soccer community, the students, staff and faculty members of both universities to attend."
Since Winnipeg entered Canada West women's soccer play in the 2012 season, the Bisons have a perfect 5-0 record against the Wesmen in conference action (Sept. 7/12: W 1-0 at Wpg.; Sept. 21/13: W 2-0 at home; Sept. 13/14: W 2-0; Oct. 9/15: W 2-0 at home; Oct. 10/15: W 1-0).
In 2016 conference season, Manitoba is 1-2-1 record so far at home while Winnipeg is 1-2-1 on the road. The Bisons have scored ten goals and allowed ten goals while the Wesmen have scored seven and lowed 21 goals in eight conference regular season matches.
Last season, the Bisons made history as they hosted the first ever women's soccer match at Investors Group Field and won 2-0 on October 9, 2015 in front of 778 spectators.
Bison Notes: The teams play a home-and-home series with the second conference match held on Saturday, October 8 at 12 p.m. CT at Winnipeg.
