The Bison women's soccer team (2-4-2 record) plays home-and-home weekend series against Winnipeg Wesmen (1-6-1) and host on Saturday, October 7 at 2 p.m. CT at the Turf Fields – west side at U of Manitoba Fort Garry campus. The second match is on Sunday, October 8 at Winnipeg and part of 27th annual Duckworth Challenge.
This is an important weekend as Manitoba is in sixth spot in the Prairie Division and Top 6 teams in each division qualify for playoffs. Heading into the weekend, there is only six Canada West regular season games left and Winnipeg and Regina are four points back of Manitoba to earn a post-season berth.
Since Winnipeg entered Canada West women's soccer play in the 2012 season, the Bisons have a strong 5-1-1 record against the Wesmen in conference action (Sept. 7/12: W 1-0 at Wpg.; Sept. 21/13: W 2-0 at home; Sept. 13/14: W 2-0 at home; Oct. 9/15: W 2-0 at home; Oct. 10/15: W 1-0 at Wpg.; Oct. 6/16: T 1-1 at home; Oct. 8/16: L 2-1 at Wpg.).
The Bisons are on a two game unbeaten streak after a tie and win on the road over Sept. 30-Oct. 1 weekend and hold a 1-2-1 record at home so far. The Herd has scored eight goals and allowed 13 goals so this season.
Second year goalkeeper
Justina Jarmoszko was selected as the Canada West Female Second Star of the Week for week ending October 1. Jarmoszko (pronounced: jar-mos-ko) was a major contributor as she earned two blank sheets with consecutive shutouts and made 16 total saves and also named Manitoba's MVP of the Match over the two contests.
Jarmoszko is first in conference saves with 64, tied for second in CW minutes played at 720, tied for seventh with three conference shutouts and ninth in Canada West Save Percentage at .831 while playing in all eight matches so far in 2017.
Bison rookie
Florin Wagner is tied for third in conference goals with five and tied for 11th in CW and team lead with five points in eight conference regular season games. Second year midfielder Hailey Lavarais is second on the Herd with three points (1g, 2a) in eight games.
Bison Notes: The Sunday match will also be part of the 27th annual Duckworth Challenge event (a friendly competition that pits the University of Manitoba versus the University of Winnipeg in women's soccer, basketball and volleyball – both teams).
