The Manitoba Bisons (0-2) will celebrate the 10th anniversary of 2007 Vanier Cup Champions during 2017 Homecoming game weekend.
The Vanier Cup trophy will be at the 2017 Homecoming game, presented by Barley Brothers, on Saturday, September 16 with kickoff at 1 p.m. CT against the #3 Calgary Dinos and there will be a halftime celebration of the 2007 championship team.
Bison Football head coach
Brian Dobie, in his 22nd season and coach of the 2007 team enthused, "I am so very proud to welcome back our 2007 National Championship Team! It will be so special to watch them walk out onto the field at IGF at halftime this Saturday, carrying with them the Vanier Cup."
The 2007 Vanier Cup team was the third Manitoba Bisons U SPORTS national football championship team (1969, 1970, 2007) and established a new record as the first-ever U SPORTS football team to go unbeaten with a perfect 12-0 (regular season and playoffs) in one season.
The 2007 championship game was played in front of a crowd of 26,787 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, the seventh largest in U SPORTS football history. The third-ranked Manitoba Bisons (12-0) won 28-14 over the No. 4 Saint Mary's Huskies (9-2) in the 43rd edition of the Vanier Cup final on Friday, November 23, 2007.
Dobie continued, "It takes a very, very special group of players to go through an incredibly tough journey to ultimately win a Vanier. I watched our guys begin that journey as a 3-5 non-playoff team in 2004, but continue to persevere and build until they became the first team in U SPORTS history to go 12-0, undefeated, and Vanier Cup champions!"
In addition, there is a Bison Football fundraising breakfast on Friday, September 15 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. in the Pinnacle Room at Investors Group Field. The breakfast will also recognize the 2007 champs with the Vanier Cup in attendance and proceeds from the breakfast will support student athletic scholarship for Bison Football. More details on this event is on gobisons.ca website.
Bison Notes: Tickets for the annual Homecoming game are available through all Ticketmaster locations and also at Investors Group Field on game day.
