WSOC: Bisons' offensive barrage outpaces Wesmen for weekend sweep

Jessica Tsai notched her sixth assist in a 4-0 victory over Winnipeg.

WINNIPEG – Manitoba soccer fans packed into the WSF Soccer South Complex on Saturday, October 12, and watched the Manitoba Bisons defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 4-0 in an all-Manitoba match-up.

Tonight's game featured an offensive barrage from an assortment of Bison scorers.

"After having so many missed opportunities Thursday night, we made it a priority to score more goals and the girls capitalized tonight," said head coach Vanessa Martinez Langunas.

Fourth-year Bison midfielder Hailey Lavarias scored midway through the first half to capitalize on an electric start for the Bisons' offense. Midfielder Gabrielle Clark laced a quick cross inside the box to Lavarias for her second goal of the season.

Clark carried Manitoba's offensive energy into the second half scoring early on a header from a corner kick sent in by rookie midfielder Jessica Tsai.

With her sixth assist, Tsai now ties Trinity Western's Jenaya Robertson atop the leaderboard for the most points in Canada West women's soccer.

"Being able to take corners has definitely helped my assist total; but, for goals, it's all about being in position and taking my chances. They have been working out for me," said Tsai.

Despite allowing four goals, Winnipeg's rookie goalkeeper, Taryn Raabe consistently kept the Wesmen in the game. Raabe tallied 12 saves, stunning the crowd with highlight reel saves throughout 90 minutes of Manitoba-dominated soccer.

"She stood on her head. She shouldn't have to do that, but she was mentally strong and kept us in it for the first half," said Wesmen head coach Amy Anderson.

Midfielder Nicole Davis and Forward Celeste Gallego added to Manitoba's dominant second half, scoring their sixth and second goals of the season respectfully.

"We didn't produce enough quality plays, and quality plays are what wins soccer games," said Anderson. "It wasn't a lack of effort; Manitoba is a great team."

The win brings Manitoba to 6-5-1 on the season as they look to successfully close out the season next weekend while the Wesmen's back-to-back losses bring them to a 1-11-0 record on the season.

Manitoba plays their final games of the season against the Mount Royal Cougars, and Lethbridge Pronghorns at the West Turf Field (U of M campus) next weekend.
