WSOC: Bisons' late push rewarded with thrilling 3-1 victory over Mount Royal

Gabrielle Clark's two-goal performance propels Bisons to a third win in a row

With their playoff contentions clinched for the 2019-20 season, Bisons women's soccer kept their hopes of hosting in the postseason alive with a 3-1 win against Mount Royal on Friday night.

In a match that featured two first half penalties, the Bisons kept their composure to earn all three points and extend their win streak to three games.

Pressuring the Cougars early on, the Bisons were rewarded after just ten minutes. Forward Nicole Davis won a penalty kick for the home side and midfielder Gabrielle Clark converted her second goal of the season.

"I was kind of shaky, but I just stayed true and put it where I usually put it," said Clark, who was named the Bisons player of the match.

The Cougars came close to leveling when Bisons goalkeeper Alexis Anderson dropped a free kick behind her yet recovered to pull it off the line.

Mount Royal forward Athena Fourlas was then sent on a breakaway minutes later, producing a timely save from Anderson.

At the 37th minute, the visitors' persistence gifted them a glorious opportunity to tie the match when midfielder Stefanie Young committed a foul inside the Bisons penalty area. Defender Quinn Hardstaff placed her penalty kick off the inside of the right post to equalize for the Cougars.

Young then entered the referee's book when she was shown a yellow card early in the second half for a late challenge on Hardstaff.

The home side retook the lead after 70 minutes from Clark's second goal of the match. Jessica Tsai's punched corner kick landed favourably at the feet of Clark, who spun and struck a fierce half-volley into the roof of the goal.

A relentless attack from the Bisons led to an insurance goal from Davis, following up a chance after Greenley had pushed a Young free kick back towards danger.

Bisons coach Vanessa Martinez-Lagunas praised her team for their poise in strong second half, especially after converting and then giving a penalty kick in the first 45 minutes.

"Once they got the PK, they were very aggressive, and I think that helped them. We did very well in the second half," said Martinez-Lagunas.

The Bisons improve to 7-5-1 on the season, temporarily moving them to third on the Canada West Prairie division. The Cougars fall to 1-10-2, sitting only above last-place Winnipeg in the division.

The Bisons will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, October 19 at the West Turf Field (U of M campus).
