Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | John Gaudes, Bison Sports

MHKY: Bisons jump on Thunderbirds early, ride out 5-2 win

Adam Henry had two goals, while Riley Lamb made 40 saves in the win for Manitoba.

WINNIPEG – Despite their third straight game battling a lop-sided shots margin, the Manitoba Bisons (4-3-0) took advantage of their chances and won their second straight, 5-2 over the UBC Thunderbirds (1-4-2) at Wayne Fleming Arena.

UBC outshot Manitoba 42-18 in the game, but it was the Bisons who were able to break through.

Veterans led the way for Manitoba, as fifth-year defenceman Adam Henry scored two goals while fifth-year forward Jonah Wasylak notched two assists. After the game, Bisons head coach Mike Sirant was quick to compliment Henry for his play.

"[Henry's] gonna be able to set up goals, he's gonna be able to score, and he's gonna be leading the team in shot blocks. That's how valuable he is to us and what a complete player we have in him."

Scoring his third and fourth goals on the season, Henry is now tied for the most goals by a defenceman in Canada West through seven games.

Matthew Stanley, Geordie Keane, and Dylan Thiessen also scored for the Bisons, who rattled off the first four goals of the game to build a lead they wouldn't relinquish. UBC got a second period marker from Carter Popoff and a third period goal from Tyler Sandhu.

In net, the Bisons got another excellent performance from first-year goalie Riley Lamb — the conference leader in saves. Lamb was able to make another 40 on Saturday, including 20 in the second period alone, to earn the win. Patrick Dea made 13 saves opposite Lamb for UBC.

Manitoba's first goal came 4:11 in as Dylan Thiessen made a brilliant blue line move to score on the power play. Goals from Keane and Henry rounded out the first, as the Bisons went into the first intermission up 3-0.

After another Henry goal made it 4-0 to start the second, penalties started to haunt the Herd. UBC began to control play and the Bisons took four straight penalties in the period. Still, the T'Birds were only able to capitalize once, despite 21 shots on net.

"It wasn't a pretty game, it wasn't our best performance, but a win is a win and it's two valuable points," said Sirant. "We know that we can be and that we have to be a lot better tomorrow."

Sandhu's goal at 00:58 in the third would make it closer, but again Manitoba was able to keep UBC from doing further damage. An empty netter from Stanley gave the game its final score.

Manitoba and UBC meet tomorrow at 2 PM CDT at Wayne Fleming Arena.
