WINNIPEG – The UBC Thunderbirds (2-4-2) settled the score with the Manitoba Bisons (4-4-0) on Sunday afternoon, working a favourable shots margin in their favour and earning a 3-1 win at Wayne Fleming Arena.
UBC got two goals from Austin Vetterl in the victory, with another from Austin Glover in the first period. Rylan Toh made 21 saves to earn the win for the visitors.
In a similar story to Saturday's game, the Thunderbirds enjoyed more offensive zone time than the Bisons. This time, though, UBC didn't give up as many opportunities going the other way, playing more solid in the middle and forcing tougher angles for Manitoba.
"We had a better start today than yesterday," said Thunderbirds head coach Sven Butchenschon. "Yesterday, our start cost us. Slow in the first period, fell behind the eight-ball, and couldn't catch up. Today, we sustained it, we stuck to it, and tried not to squeeze our sticks too much because I know our forwards are snake-bitten right now. But it was nice to see them get a couple goals and get rewarded."
One of those forwards, Austin Glover, got the first goal of the game early in the second period, at 3:39. The marker was Glover's fourth of the season.
Manitoba would get an answer late in the period, though, as first-year Tony Apetagon scored his first U SPORTS goal — set up by on an odd-man rush that started with a fierce centre ice hit by the Bisons' Matthew Stanley.
The knotted game wouldn't last long, though, as just 2:30 later Austin Vetterl got ahead of the Manitoba defence and wired a shot off the crossbar and in.
Vetterl would add a third period empty netter, in what was an excellent defensive period for his team. After a special teams march in the back half of Saturday's game, Sunday's game featured more 5-on-5 play — which Butchenschon was happy with.
"I liked in the third period how they let us play, there were no whistles, and it was back-and-forth — I think that was to our advantage," said the head coach.
"Still, they're a good defensive team, they're good structurally, they're good with their sticks, they've got big boys back there and they made it hard on us."
UBC heads home to host Saskatchewan next weekend, while the Bisons will play a road series in Regina.
