On Wednesday, U SPORTS announced its Team Canada delegation for the 2019 FISU Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy, with one athlete and a Bison Sports staff member set to be part of the delegation.
Named to her first Team Canada appearance is women's volleyball libero Cassie Bujan, who recently finished her fifth and final year with the Bisons.
The Anola, MB native was a 2018-19 Canada West Second Team All-Star, showing outstanding libero play by breaking two conference season records — most digs (448) and most digs per set (4.87). The latter mark broke a 12-year-old record in Canada West. Bujan played in all 24 matches for the Herd.
Curt Warkentin will also be part of the delegation, as the Associate Director of Athletics at Bison Sports will be an Operations Officer with the Team Canada Mission Staff. Warkentin joined Bison Sports in 2007 after seven years as assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Waterloo and six years as Athletic Director and men's basketball coach at CMU.
Warkentin has represented the University of Manitoba on several committees at the U SPORTS and Canada West levels, including the past four-and-a-half years on the Canada West Board of Directors as Vice-President of Sport. This will be the second time that Warkentin has been a member of Team Canada mission staff, as he was also at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.
The FISU Games will run from July 3-14, with volleyball taking place from July 5-13. Canada finished 16th overall at the 2017 FISU Summer Universiade with 13 medals. The full delegation for this year's Games is over 300 members.
