WSOC: Davis scores two, Bisons beat TRU 4-0

Biebrich also records first career regular season shutout.

WINNIPEG — Two Nicole Davis goals in the first half were more than enough for the Manitoba Bisons (2-3) on Friday night at the Winnipeg Soccer Federation South Complex as they topped the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 4-0 (0-4-1).

"[Davis] probably could have had a hat trick. She was dangerous all match," Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas said postgame.

"I'm very proud of her. She has been so consistent from game one to now and I just hope she continues with that pace and determination."

Manitoba's speed was on full display in the opening 45 minutes, with Davis, as well as fellow midfielder Dalima Chhibber and defender Stefanie Young creating numerous chances.

The Bisons cracked the scoreboard at the 11-minute mark thanks to an excellent lead pass from Young to Davis who got behind the defence and made no mistake.

The 2018 All-Rookie member added to her total 26 minutes in. Defender Katherine Meo booted a ball that took an unfortunate bounce off a TRU defender and right to Davis who went bottom left corner.

The visitors pressed for a response, including multiple chances for forward Chantal Gammie, however the Bisons' defence stood firm. Fellow forward Rylee Mugridge also had a phenomenal opportunity from inside the box at the 44-minute mark, but first-year Manitoba goalie Anna Biebrich made the stop for her best save of the contest.

"Fantastic performance," Martinez Lagunas said of her goaltender. "Not only on two huge saves that were almost goals but also great distribution. The first goal came from her and then we played it to the goal. It was a really good performance, I'm proud of her."

The hosts picked up where they left off in the second half, as Meo delivered an excellent ball to first-year midfielder Jessica Tsai who raced past two Wolfpack defenders and put the ball in the left corner.

Young — who was a presence all game on both sides of the pitch — put the Bisons up by four four minutes later, pivoting to her left foot to deliver the goal of the contest on a booming shot from 50 yards out that went off the crossbar and in.

Thompson Rivers' best opportunity in the final 45 minutes of play came on a free kick from just outside the box at the 53-minute mark, but midfielder Camryn Curts' shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Manitoba will look to continue their momentum tomorrow against UBC Okanagan, while Thompson Rivers will face Winnipeg.
