KAMLOOPS, BC – An upset wasn't in the cards for Bisons women's volleyball in the first match of a weekend set against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (25-16, 25-22, 25-12). The home team won in straight sets, improving to 11-4 on the season. Manitoba drops to 2-13 with the loss.
Light Uchechukwu led the way for the Bisons in the attack game, notching 10 kills on 27 swings. Kearley Abbott added eight kills with 13 digs and two service aces, while Kelsey Jordan added 19 assists.
In between two dominating sets by the WolfPack, the match swung on a pivotal stretch of points in the second set where TRU scored five straight after the technical timeout.
"There are makeable plays out there that we need to do a better job with," said Bisons head coach Ken Bentley.
"There were enough plays out there in the second set to win the set. So, I don't take much consolation in that, I think that the plays we could've managed better to win the set would've put us in a better position."
After that run by the WolfPack, the Bisons responded with a timeout and six straight points to climb back in — cutting the lead to 22-21. They weren't able to close, though, as fifth-year TRU hitter Kendra Finch had the match-winning kill.
TRU was led by Finch, who had 14 kills in 33 opportunities. Second-year Olga Savenchuk added 11 kills in an efficient 22 chances, with six digs and two block assists.
These two teams meet tomorrow night at 5 PM PT.
