WINNIPEG – On Friday night, Bisons women's hockey used a four-goal second period to propel them to a 4-2 victory over the Regina Cougars. Saturday brought the two teams back to the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg for the final game of the two-game weekend series.
Cougars captain Ireland Sorestad scored with 6:45 left on the clock in the third period to put her team up 3-1. Sorestad's third of the year turned out to be the game-winner, as Regina went on to defeat the Bisons by a final score of 3-2.
"After the loss last night, we were striving to play a full 60 today," said Sorestad. "We played a lot more consistent today, we were able to drive to the net and get more pucks on their goalie."
With the win, Regina's record improves to 2-6-0-0 while No. 7 ranked Manitoba falls to 6-2-0-0 on the season.
Manitoba goaltender Meagan Relf recorded 29 saves in the loss.
"Overall, I felt pretty strong out there today," said Relf. "My team played well in front of me. It will be good to have a break coming up after all the hockey we have been playing these last couple weeks."
Third-year Bison Vanessa Klimpke gave her team an early 1-0 lead just 2:39 into the first. Molly Kunnas entered the zone with the puck and pulled off a highlight reel move to get around a Regina defender before dishing it over to Klimpke for the game's first tally.
Before the period was out, the Cougars' Makena Kushniruk and Lilla Carpenter-Boesch found themselves on a 2-on-0. Carpenter-Boesch slid a pass over to Kushniruk but her shot hit the cross bar and went out of play. The hosts hit the locker room with a 1-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.
The visitors scored the lone goal in the second period to tie the game up at 1-1 headed into the third. With 2:56 left in the middle frame, Carptenter-Boesch beat Relf with a shot through the five-hole to even the score.
Paige Hubbard scored her first of the season at the 16:13 mark of the third to give her Cougars squad their first lead of the weekend, going up 2-1. The Sorestad goal extended Regina's lead to 3-1 with 6:45 left in the game. Halle Edwards added a power play goal late in the third to cut the deficit back to one, but the Cougars held off the Bisons' late attack to claim the 3-2 victory on the road.
Both teams will resume their Canada West campaigns on Friday, November 19. The Bisons will be on the road for a pair of games against the Mount Royal Cougars while the Cougars will host the Trinity Western Spartans.
