WINNIPEG — Playing strong two-way basketball to start 2022, the No. 5 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen remained undefeated on Friday (9-0), beating the Manitoba Bisons (2-7) in women's basketball, 95-47.
While the Bisons hung in with the nation's top team, the Saskatchewan Huskies, in their final series before the holiday break, they started this game cold from the field and were in catch-up mode much of the way. Still, the Bartlett sisters began to find their range in the second half and finished with a combined 18 points — Deidre with 10 and Lauren with eight.
Lana Shypit had eight points and six boards off the bench for the Bisons.
The game was part of the 30th Duckworth Challenge, a competition between the two cross-town rivals that features games in women's soccer, as well as men's and women's volleyball and basketball. With the victory, the Wesmen knotted the 2021-22 edition of the Challenge at 1-1 following a women's soccer victory for Manitoba in the fall.
The Duckworth Challenge continues with men's basketball later tonight, with men's volleyball on January 19 and women's volleyball on January 21 — both at IGAC.
The Wesmen were led on Friday by 28 points and 12 rebounds from Keylyn Filewich, while Kyanna Giles was close to a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Manitoba struggled with their outside shooting, going just 8-for-36. Their bench came in and played well, though, outscoring Winnipeg 20-15.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in Manitoba's home gym.
