Bisons battle with undefeated Wesmen, as visitors win 77-61

Autumn Agar led Manitoba with 20 points.

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Bisons women's basketball team faced off against the Winnipeg Wesmen tonight on Saturday, Jan 15 in the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Coming from a tough loss the night before to the Wesmen, the Bisons were looking to get their first winter season win. But they couldn't find it, suffering a tough 77-61-point loss.

The Bisons' quick transitions allowed them to keep up with the No. 5 ranked team in the first quarter. They would end the quarter in a 19-19 tie. Autumn Agar, the Bisons forward, scored seven points for the home team.

Halfway through the second quarter Robyn Boulanger, guard for the Wesmen, tossed a Hail Mary pass down the court. The Bisons just managed to intercept it and scored a quick field goal, again bringing the game to a tie.

In the second quarter of the game, the Bisons defence couldn't keep up with the Wesmen's accuracy in the paint, who were shooting 55% to the Bisons 33%.

With just 30 seconds left on the clock, the Wesmen would set up a pick-and-roll that would then lead into a pass and a quick layup by Keylyn Filewich, forward for the Wesmen, who would go on to score 18 points this game. However, the game was still close, entering halftime 37-31 favouring the Wesmen.

The third quarter would go much like the first. Neither team was able to shut down the other offence. The Wesmen wouldn't be able to gain a substantial lead, and the Bisons could not tie the game up from the past quarter. The third would end with the Wesmen still ahead, 59-51.

The fourth and final quarter started with a quick three-pointer from the Wesmen. This early play would set the pace for the rest of the quarter, with the Wesmen quickly and dominantly increasing their lead. The Wesmen would end the game with a 16-point lead.

"There's some things we weren't great at. Our rebounding needs a lot of work [for the next game]," said Bisons head coach Michele Sung.

The Bisons will be facing the Regina Cougars in two weeks.
