REGINA -- Defenceman
Samuel Stewart scored his first goal of the season in overtime, as the Manitoba Bisons stole the extra point from Regina, while sweeping the weekend series to improve to 2-2 with a 4-3 win.
The Herd battled back from two goals down after 20, scoring three times less than a minute apart to take a one-goal lead into the third. Regina evened the score, but it was the visitors who closed the game out in the extra session, as Stewart finished off a two-on-one with forward
Dylan Thiessen, going top shelf for the game-winner.
Seven different players recorded a point in the victory for Manitoba, while
Ross Hawryluk made over 30 saves for the second straight game to record his second win between the pipes.
Manitoba's first goal of the game came at 3:12 of the second on the power play on some tape-to-tape passing between
Brett Davis and Skoleski, with Thiessen eventually finding the back of the net. He got solid positioning in front of the Regina goal and tapped in an accurate pass from near the left point by Skoleski. The tally was the Herd's sixth power play goal in their first four games.
The Bisons tied the game up 29 seconds later, as veteran blue-liner
Mitchell Dyck whipped a snap shot home for his first goal of the year. Manitoba wasn't done yet, as 29 second after that,
Tony Apetagon recorded his third goal of the year on a no-doubter after being left wide open below the goal line.
Apetagon's goal was set up by
Hayden Ostir, who sped from the neutral zone into the offensive end, winning a puck battle and feeding it to Thiessen, who then found Apetagon for his 11th career U SPORTS goal.
Manitoba closed things out in overtime, as Thiessen forced a turnover that led to an odd-man rush with Stewart. His assist on the game-winner completed a three-point night and improved his points total to five on the year.
Manitoba will travel to Trinity Western next week for the second of back-to-back road weekends.
