LANGLEY -- The Manitoba Bisons (3-2-0-0) extended their win streak to three on Friday afternoon against Trinity Western, winning 5-2 in a game that saw Manitoba's top line of
Devon Skoleski,
Brett Davis and
Colton Veloso combine for six points.
Skoleski got the scoring started 1:17 into the game and added the game-winner on the power play in the second period. He has a point in every game this year, and is tied with defenceman
Chase Hartje for the team lead in that category, with 11. Skoleski added an assist on Veloso's second goal of the season, while Davis had two helpers. Hartje's assist in the second period marked a new career high for points in a season, after putting up ten points in 15 games in his Bisons debut a year ago.
Michael King and
Jackson Arpin provided depth scoring for Manitoba as well, while veteran
Dylan Thiessen tallied his fourth point in the last two games.
Ross Hawryluk got his third straight victory in net, with 26 saves
Skoleski's third of the season was a beauty. He received a pass from Davis from behind the net and while falling, went forehand to backhand top shelf. The lone assist on the play, Davis out-skated three Spartans to the puck, finding Skoleski with space just outside the crease.
The Spartans tied the game up four minutes later, but Manitoba went to the second up 2-1 thanks to Veloso. Skoleski caused a turnover near the half wall, getting the puck to his linemate, who was ready and waiting on a one-timer from close range.
Skoleski netted the game-winner at 9:40 of the second on the power play. Hartje spread the puck out wide to Davis, who went cross-ice to Skoleski. With two Spartans laying off, he walked in with plenty of time and went low blocker side from near the point for the game-winner. King added insurance a minute later, finishing off a scramble where teammates Thiessen and
Andre Sutter both got shots on net.
King caused a turnover near the Spartans' blue line, keeping the puck in with his skate and then trailing Thiessen and Sutter. The latter's shot was stopped blocker side, but a generous rebound went to Thiessen and eventually to King.
The Spartans scored late in the second but it wasn't enough, as Arpin added another for Manitoba midway through the third to conclude the scoring. Trinity Western turned the puck over on a clearing attempt from behind the net, giving it right to
Noah Basarab. He was stopped on a one-timer, but Arpin was right there to bat in the rebound, showing impressive hand-eye coordination.
