Box Score The University of Manitoba Bisons women's soccer team snapped a five game winless streak on Thursday, Oct. 3 with a 3-0 victory over crosstown rival, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, on home turf.
"This win feels so nice and was exactly what our team needed," said Bisons Head Coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas. "Really proud of the team with the energy and belief they brought tonight. We knew we had been playing well lately and just needed that first goal. We got the three points."
Â
Herd captain
Jessica Tsai got the Bisons on the board first with a goal in the 31
st minute, ending what had also been a three game goal-less drought for Manitoba. Prior to a pass from
Bianca Cavalcanti, Tsai found an open lane just out the 18-yard box and put the ball into the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winner.Â
Â
After drawing the assist on the first Bison goal, Cavalcanti went on to add the next two Manitoba goals in the match, her fifth and sixth of the regular season.Â
Â
The victory lifts the Bisons record to 4-6-1 on their campaign, with three games left on the regular season schedule and still jockeying for playoff position in Canada West.Â
Â
The story of the game for Winnipeg was their goalkeeper Madison Priebe. Despite the final result, the first-year goalie made several key stops to prevent the game from completely getting away from the Wesmen. Priebe made a total of seven saves on 10 shots in the match.
Â
Tsai's game-winning tally came exactly 10 minutes before Cavalcanti scored her first of the game in the 41
st minute. The second-year forward was given a gift in front of the Wesmen net after teammate
Janelle Chomini made a nice move to get around two defenders and put a shot on net that was deflected but eventually Cavalcanti put the ball away.
Â
Chomini found herself with numerous chances throughout the game and was an offensive threat for her entire 56 minutes of playing time.Â
Â
In the second half at the 51-minute mark,
Ava Memka took a shot a goal from a fair distance, narrowly missing out on her first U SPORTS goal. Memka's shot went off the Winnipeg goalkeeper's fingertips, the crossbar and over the net.Â
Â
The 61
st minute brought Winnipeg's best scoring chance on the night, as Silvana Saramuzzi had a lane down the middle of the field, but just before getting her shot off, two Bison defenders shut her down.Â
Â
Cavalcanti's second goal of the match came in 77
th minute, five minutes after barely missing on a shot that went off the crossbar and out of play.Â
In a few short days the Wesmen will host, as the two sides will face each other again this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in Winnipeg in the first leg of the Duckworth Challenge. The Bisons' regular season will conclude on the road next weekend on October 15 and 16 against the Lethbridge Pronghorns and the Mount Royal Cougars.Â
