MVB: Bisons split weekend with UBC after straight-set loss on Saturday

Manitoba’s Ben Carleton led the team with five while Jack Mandryk added 11 assists in the loss.

Box Score WINNIPEG – Following a convincing win over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night, the University of Manitoba men's volleyball team were back on the court Saturday evening with a record of 3-4 and hopes to bring their record back to .500.

The Bisons were hosting the Thunderbirds for a second-straight day inside the Investors Group Athletic Centre after downing UBC in three-straight sets on Friday night.

Saturday night saw the result turn the other way as the Bisons found themselves on the wrong end of a straight-set loss to UBC (25-20, 25-18, 25-13).

Fourth-year Ben Carleton led the Bisons on the night registering five kills while setter Jack Mandryk added 11 assists. The loss sees Manitoba's record fall to 3-5 on the season.

"First of all, UBC played a lot better than they did yesterday," said Bisons Head Coach Lupo Ludwig. "On the other side, we did not play even close to like we did yesterday. We did not follow the game plan 100%, made too many errors and just weren't ready as a team to play."

Two quick service aces from the Bisons' Eric Ogaranko helped Manitoba jump out to an early 4-1 lead in the opening set. However, UBC was able to string together a 6-2 run to pull them back into the first set. From there, the two sides battled to an 11-11 tie before the Thunderbirds took their first lead at 14-13 after a hit attempt from Matthew Campbell landed out of bounds. The visitors displayed their hitting game for the rest of the set, eventually taking it by a score of 25-20.

After posting a hitting percentage of .250 in the first set, UBC continued to display their strong attacking ability in the second while capitalizing on several Manitoba errors. The Thunderbirds' Matt Neaves tallied five kills to lead the T-Birds as his squad took the second set 25-18 and the 2-0 advantage in the match as they looked to flip the script from Friday night's game.

UBC continued their dominace in the third set as the closed out the match, getting revenge on Manitoba after yesterday's loss. Neaves of UBC put down six more kills in the third and final set as the Thunderbirds grabbed their sixth win of the 2022-23 campaign.

Manitoba will remain at home this week and prepare to host their provincial rivals, the University of Brandon Bobcats, for a pair of games on November 18-19.
